Exciting personal news! 📣 Today I’m starting as Head of Litigation at Embedded Counsel (embeddedcounsel.com). Over the last few years, I've had a whirlwind of substantive experience: trials, depositions, and the kind of in-the-trenches reps and client-advising roles that have given me insight into effective case strategy and which I’ll carry with me for the rest of my career. I am so grateful to every mentor and colleague who has made that possible on this journey! At Embedded Counsel, I’ll be leading the Firm’s litigation practice, with a focus on disputes involving Massachusetts small and mid-sized businesses including Chapter 93A claims, partnership and ownership disputes, and litigation on behalf of individuals dealing with probate and real estate issues. The move also opens up something I've been wanting for a while: more room to write and speak publicly on the sophisticated work I get to do. Expect to see more from me here on what practice is like and answers to questions that arise often in my work. If you know a business owner who needs a litigator in their corner, I’d love to hear from you! 🙌🏼

After a whirlwind couple of months for my career, I’m super excited to publicly announce that I’m now working at the law firm Buchalter. Buchalter is a growing national law firm with deep strength across nearly every practice area, meaning my clients now have access to a full team of specialists to support all types of business needs, no matter how complex or how fast they grow. And for those who know me, serving the SMB community has always been at the core of what I do. That doesn’t change. Buchalter’s platform actually gives me more tools to do that work better than ever. Whether that’s helping a searcher navigate their first acquisition, or walking a business owner through the sale of a company they’ve spent decades building. My commitment to the SMB and ETA community remains the same, and I’m still very accessible to founders and operators at all stages. Super excited for what’s to come!

@HaileyLennonBTC I usually admire those who romanticize the small things. Airports are a good place to draw the line 🙅🏻‍♂️😅

Talk to your peers, find a mentor you can trust to ask, and pace yourself. Reality is it can be firm-specific and definitely happen in waves but 4+ months is not something I saw usually except for in the most busiest of times (maybe 1-2 times in six years for me). But I’m also a litigator 😅

Can someone tell me if a first year is supposed to be billing at a 220+ clip for 4 months straight, about to be 5?

@JamesHSLevine @SellersCounsel Also feel like its very office-culture-specific. With every firm I’ve been at, the new york office has been far more hustle-oriented and boston/smaller offices like providence have been more family-friendly.

This week’s BigLaw work/life balance dialogue reinforces that everyone’s circumstances are different. I made partner at an AmLaw50 and still had/have family dinner most nights. It’s about finding the right people to help you craft the right situation. People are everything.

@DavidFleckEsq Absolutely! One of my favorite use cases is testing writing I’ve already done, to fill in gaps and make sure I’m not skipping over anything. Also, reviewing my deposition transcripts to see if there are any open questions I need to nail down before discovery closes!

@LuisVargas @PopeyLocks They are not. Judging by your pfp you never played basketball a day in your life 😂. You are just counting anybody into a trio..... 😂😂

Do the Celtics have to trade Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum now? It’s clear besides that fluke season this isn’t a winning duo

@breadoverbed98 @PopeyLocks How are your goal posts changing with every tweet? 😂 I’m saying most teams need more than a good duo to win. If you are #3 obviously you’re not a duo, that’s a trio 😂

@LuisVargas @PopeyLocks So every elite duo won EVERY year? Lmao you make no sense. You can be a missing piece and not be apart of a duo you know? If a team gets the best defender in the league that averages 3 points all the sudden he is apart of the "duo"? Lmao cut it out 😭😭

@biglawbro @writeclimbrun Your ability to put your head down and do the work regardless of the impulse is exactly what would make you successful regardless of surrounding, IMO!

i thought my impulse to walk into the lead partner's office and quit in the middle of a 260 billable hr month was evidence that i have a personality disorder, and an inherent dissatisfaction with and inability to accept life. but when i spoke to the other busy associates i found out that they're all currently battling the same impulse. then i called my mom who of course just wants me to be a straight lawyer, then my buddy who quit corporate to be an entrepreneur, makes nowhere near what he used to and is currently battling a $1m lawsuit. guess i'll put my head down and keep big lawing for a bit

@BrianPJencunas Flat fee and defined scope is definitely becoming more common, but lawyers are slow to change (and bad at estimating how long something will take, many times).

@LuisVargas This is actually why I’ll never bill hourly and refuse clients that want me to track my time for reporting. It’s a great way to justify clawing back fees.

Early on in BigLaw, I was taught that the time entries on the bill were the first impression many clients would have of me, so I’d better include enough detail to show my work was valuable. Otherwise, the bill wouldn’t get paid. Holds true no matter how large the case, it seems!
