Couldn't agree more on the EA criticism - morality as a global optimization problem is a category error. But what is the degenerate case in a recursive morality but God?
the seeker@theseeker

She's actually something way worse: EA, one of the most insidious moral pathologies of our time. EA treats morality as if it's a global optimization problem. You have a fixed budget of moral resources (time, money, attention) and the question is just where to allocate them for maximum impact. The implicit model is that moral weight is fungible and location-independent. A life saved is a life saved, regardless of relational distance. But morality isn't just an allocation problem. It's better understood as a constraint structure that emerges from embeddedness. You have moral obligations *because* you're situated. Because you're a parent, a neighbor, a member of a community, a participant in a local web of mutual dependency. The obligations aren't arbitrary preferences you're indulging at the cost of "optimal" allocation. They're constitutive of what it means to be a moral agent *at all*. The EA move is basically: abstract away from all relational structure, treat every moral patient as equivalent, and optimize globally. But this is the same error as trying to optimize a complex system by ignoring its multi-scale architecture. You can't just bypass the local constraint layers and operate at the global level. The local layers are doing essential coordination work! EA confuses the moral field with a flat optimization landscape, when it's actually a recursively structured constraint hierarchy where each scale has its own integrity. Trying to override local moral structure for global optimization is the same category error as central planning. It replaces living moral fabric with dead optimization metrics, while calling it progress.
