Dowry killings didn't disappear. They just got educated. Earlier it was kerosene and a matchstick 'gas leak ho gaya, cooker fat gaya' and the case would close before the body turned cold. I have seen this in my own circle in Bihar. MILs executing it with such cold precision, no trembling hands, no guilt, no tears that meant anything. It was a system. It ran smoothly. Now those same women are educated, English speaking, socially presentable and the weapon has upgraded too. Now it's 'she was schizophrenic.' Now it's 'she had a drug problem.'
Different era, same blueprint, cleaner paperwork. Patriarchy didn't lose its volunteers. It just sent them to school.
