I love the moment when Ahab tells the crew, “Commend the murderous chalices!” Of course, readers in 1851 would have recognized the allusion to Macbeth: “... commends the ingredients of our poison’d chalice to our own lips.” The cup that Ahab proffers them is a poisoned one.

Moby-Dick is unbelievably good, an extremely unusual novel that really surprised me: had no idea how funny it would be. I can’t think of any writer quite like Herman Melville apart from Shakespeare. Both mix comedy, drama, and tragedy in a way that’s extremely hard to pull off.
