@birchlse If the players goal is to always to get the most money, then the predictor will always make box B empty, and the player will always pick both because they know the contents. If the player wanted to spite the predictor, they would pick one, causing the infinite prediction loop.

@birchlse This is a case of the halting problem: the predictor predicts your choice, but then you would change your choice because you would see the results of the prediction, so the predictor has to factor that in and change the prediction, but then your choice would change.. ad infinitum

@WokeFDR What if the threshold was 99% for blue to be safe? “The simpler solution is to have 100% of people press the same button rather than >99% press the other button. I am very smart”. Doesn't work like that

@illrisked @morallawwithin Yes, and that’s why I think he would be more likely to reject it as a real feature of the world if he learned modern physics

@lvl5hm @morallawwithin Aristotle did not talk about act-potency for the purposes of epistemology, no.

Honestly we could go further. If Aristotle were educated in a modern university, there is *absolutely no way* he would have come up with Aristotelianism. It’s simply not the kind of thing someone as smart as him would say “Yeah this seems like the most natural explanation of things” about after learning modern physics.
John@ErrorTheorist

Here’s a paper arguing that there is no progress in philosophy. The author claims that if Aristotle visited a modern university, he would be amazed by modern physics but feel at home in the philosophy classes, since the debates haven’t fundamentally changed. What do you think?

@illrisked @morallawwithin Isn’t b-theory adopted by physicists precisely because it’s very convenient to think about time as a dimension? Act-potency is convenient when talking about what we think *might* happen, but it reflects epistemic limitations, not some deep feature of reality

@illrisked @morallawwithin But then I don’t see the point? Might as well say that the merely potential car to my left becomes actual as it crosses to my right. Idk how the old notion of time deals with being bent by a lead ball and having no universal “now”

@lvl5hm @morallawwithin You can keep b-theory of time & act/potency. Act simply becomes an arbitrary cutout of one continuous timeline. I think Aristotle's definition of time on its own is simply better anyway. It's not a force. It's just a measure of changing things with regards to the before & after.

@illrisked @morallawwithin considering how popular b-theory of time is among physicists, I'd say that understanding relativity makes act-potency seem way more dubious (because time is just a dimension and future is no less actual than past)

@morallawwithin He absolutely would have kept his act-potency distinction, his definitions of place (not space) and time, and his four causes. He would have had to carefully rethink his four elements & natural vs. violent motion vis-a-vis Newton's Laws, & he would have thrown out his cosmology.

Took 3.5 billion years to go from single cell organisms to us. Your lifespan will see 0.00000002% of the time it took for evolution to get here. In short you asking how a movie goes or ends but can only see a tiny portion of a single frame right in the middle of it.
PortHarcourt Sailor@GodsgreatG

I have a genuine question. Many scientists say humans evolved from apes and other primates. So why don’t we see that kind of evolution happening today? Why does it seem like it stopped?

NASA writes mission-critical flight software in C. And the rules are absolutely INSANE. > No recursion. Ever. > Every loop must have a provable upper bound. > No dynamic memory allocation after initialization. > Max ~60 lines per function. > Minimum 2 assertions per function. > Every return value must be checked. > Zero compiler warnings allowed. > Daily static analysis. Zero warnings there too. > No function pointers. > Restricted pointer dereferencing. This is how they write code at NASA / JPL for mission-critical systems.

@DoodGuyMcPants @PSA_Sitch These are the claimed "tariffs charged to the USA", but in reality this is how that number was calculated. x.com/Geiger_Capital… There are no tariffs used in the calculation, just imports and exports
Geiger Capital@Geiger_Capital

This guy cracked the tariff formula: @orthonormalist It’s simply the nation’s trade deficit with us divided by the nation’s exports to us. Yes. Really. Vietnam: Exports 136.6, Imports 13.1 Deficit = 123.5 123.5/136.6 = 90%
