@BBCArchive Both draughty (British English) and drafty (American English) are correct spellings for a room with cold air currents, representing the same word adapted for different regions. Use draughty in the UK/Commonwealth, and drafty in the U.S./Canada. They share the same pronunciation

#OnThisDay 1970: With no mains drainage, the Scottish village of Auchmithie was a place where most residents didn’t have their own toilet and relied on a drafty communal privy. A brand-new public convenience was built, with keys for the villagers to do their business in peace.

Meet Mackenzie Bly (not his real name; see back cover). I wanted to write something purely funny, but I fell in love with my lead character along the way. It's out in August, but the lovely proofs have just arrived. Retweet before tomorrow (Sun) evening, and I'll pick 2 winners.

On ‘Thought for the Day’ today a vicar came on and asked: ‘Do dogs have souls?’ Thank you vicar for prompting me to start the day with a laugh!

@nickimoraa at this point in time we should just have removable limbs we put in a box under the bed when sleeping. because somehow no position to sleep in is comfortable anymore.

Why does everyone force introverts to “leave their comfort zone” but no one forces extroverts to shut up for awhile?

I’ve just done a Speed Awareness Course after being caught doing 34mph in a 30mph zone. To be honest I was pissed off - my friends often mock how slowly I drive and how angry I get when I see drivers speeding. I use my speed limiter almost all the time to keep within the limit. I assumed it would be a useless waste of three hours from which I would learn nothing - basically a scam so people could make money from me and the rest of those on the course. I was completely wrong. The presenter was calm, polite, efficient and sensible and her manner made it instantly clear this would not be a waste of time. More importantly, the content itself was interesting, important and relevant even to someone who - clearly wrongly in my case - thinks they are a safe driver. I was really impressed. The whole thing was well put together and engaging.

Men are not being gaslit in public health campaigns about diseases that only affect males. Sexed language isn’t quietly being dropped from information about prostate cancer or testicular screenings in the name of “inclusion.” Healthcare providers are, rightly, prioritising clear, sex-based language to ensure vital health messages reach the men who need them. So why does that clarity suddenly become controversial when the patients are women?
