@lynnmsully @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom It’s not semantics. Even the link you provided from the MIT Living Wage calculator shows them as totally different numbers, with the poverty rate at $6.53/hr in Middlesex Co.
It’s misleading to say Paras are earning poverty rates. Starting rate is well above that, even Woburn.

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom However, with due respect, I believe that working closely with the most needy students in districts should be enough to justify being paid a livable wage. The job has changed drastically but the pay has not.

Instead, the job requirement for Paras is just a high school diploma. That’s not good enough for our kids OR to justify the raises Paras want

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Paras need an associate degree or need to pass the Para pro test to be hired in most districts. Once hired, they have professional development many times throughout the year. Also - many paras I know have a bachelors degree and still do not make enough money to pay their bills

@WesterosGenZ @noanonymouse @BostonDotCom Paras work closely with the most needy students - they should earn enough money for their hard work and dedication to be able to make a living. Nobody works as a para to get rich - but to be able to pay your bills would be nice!

Maybe they are going by this - along with a little common sense. If you’re earning $22K per year, and you’re paying $1,500.00/month for rent or mortgage, how can you afford your other bills?? The answer…… you can’t!

@WesterosGenZ @kelleratlarge Or they could approach bargaining as just that - listening to the concerns of the teachers who are the ones working with the students daily, and who best know the needs of the students and staff they work with, rather than come to the table with nothing but no’s and delay tactics

@noanonymouse @kelleratlarge It’s reprehensible that paras roles in public education have changed drastically, yet their pay has not!! Nobody should work that hard yet have to depend on state aid or a second job to be able to pay their bills!
