Delighted to announce our publication in the prestigious journal Nature Communications 😊
Using a co-design approach with farmers, we showed that costs of transitioning to net-zero are lower when GHG mitigation practices evoke productivity co-benefits.

New year, new degree? A new PhD project - including scholarship - is designed to examine economic, environmental and/or social co-benefits and trade-offs associated with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation: utas.edu.au/research/degre…

The Aus livestock sector aspires to net zero by 2030. We found that the sector has reduced GHG emissions by 68% over the last decade due to avoided deforestation. Practices for reducing methane will be central in determining whether net zero is attained.

Why are carbon credits are the next opportunity for farmers? This video provides a brief but fantastic overview of carbon farming, including risks and benefits associated with enrolling in soil carbon markets.

Extensive regions dominate the Australian continent, yet little is known of soil organic carbon (SOC) in such environments. We reviewed the literature and found many pathways for improving SOC. We also call for more measurements of SOC in such regions.

Is there a tension between public and private benefit associated with carbon farming? Improving soil carbon reduces global warming and benefits society, but are those practices profitable? In some cases, yes, but not always.

Denmark to introduce carbon tax on livestock greenhouse gas emissions, rising to $105/tonne CO2 by 2035. As GHG could easily be reduced by reducing animal numbers, I do hope this tax doesn’t impact on food security. #NetZero

Incremental gains in soil carbon at scale have potential for reducing global warming, but physical measurement of soil carbon is costly. We seek applicants for a PhD that develops AI models for improving the accuracy with which soil carbon is modelled.

Conventional wisdom has it that irrigation increases soil organic carbon (SOC). A recent analysis showed this is not often the case. In fact, they found that as irrigation rates increased, SOC stocks and accrual progressively decreased: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Congratulations to Private Forests Tasmania on the launch of their new website: treealliance.com.au The website includes short videos relating to economic, environmental and legislative implications associated with trees on farm. Well worth a look!

Use of models in carbon markets has raised important questions about the rigour underpinning modelling processes. To better guide implementation in soil carbon projects, we developed several best practice recommendations.
