Some personal news… Offensively late. I know. We are Uncrowned. Loved the name from the jump and only grows on me more every day. Looking forward to building this thing into the beast I know it will be. Honestly can’t wait to show you what we’re cooking up. How about that Ariel Helwani? The guy is incredible. Everything he’s done since day one elevates the medium and it hasn’t stopped now decades later. Another groundbreaking move. Is it lame to say I’m unsurprised? Proud to call him a mentor and friend. Loyalty doesn’t begin to describe the relationship and it obviously goes both ways. It took me some time, age, wisdom to realize what I wanted from my professional life and career, but when I recognized it, everything unlocked. I want to work on things I care about with people I care about. Simpler than expected maybe, but exceedingly rare. Ariel has always made this possible for me and I am eternally grateful. Hopefully I’m able to pay off that debt one day. And I’m not the only one along for the ride. GC, Frank, Petesy, others known and unknown. We get to do this together. Who’s luckier? Helwani did it again. The Yahoo team – including familiar faces (hey Ryan, Matt, Cole, Kel) and new friends – are hungry. Every ounce of effort will go toward ensuring their bet on us pays off. That what they saw in Helwani and us, what I’ve always seen in Helwani and us, what I know Uncrowned can be, comes to fruition. Never been more motivated. Vox Media gave me an opportunity that I get emotional even trying to describe. Started there as an intern in 2012. Left and came back as an experienced professional with a real understanding of how to navigate the world. None of it happens without Bryan Tucker opening the door back up. I was very happy at ESPN, but he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. My former 🥲 colleagues at MMA Fighting are a collection of solid humans. Shaheen, a legend of the game who I’ve known my entire career. Respect and admire him. Damon, a man I’ve never seen outworked (and I pride myself on being the hardest worker in the room). Mike, creator of the greatest theme song in history and a truly talented guy willing to do whatever it takes for the team to win. Jed, the hottest taker there ever was. AK, one of the most genuine and giving humans I’ve met. Gui, the Brazilian Beast, another legend and somebody I consider a friend forever. Jose, not even the well documented travel curse can stop this man from doing what he does best: showing up to the biggest events. Casey, THE OG of this game. Undefeated. Undisputed. Shoutout to the GOAT Esther Lin too (just cuz). Steven, a pleasure to work with you and hope all is well. There’s an entire team behind the scenes at Vox who were essential to The MMA Hour. Alex and Joe, you’ve been there for multiple iterations of this thing and were always steady hands. Appreciate everything you did for us. Andy, a recent addition to the squad, but made an immediate and massive impact. Miles, Matt, Srinivas - you’re all wizards. To the fans that ride with us every week, who send thoughtful messages, who spend very valuable time watching and listening to us, you are everything. Without you, this is a hobby, not a career. It blows my mind every time I think about it. Can’t thank you all enough for your support and faith. The best is yet to come. My wife Holly is an actual superhuman who balances the lives and schedules of our three children (love you Averi, Cecilia, Logan) with allowing me the latitude to chase professional dreams. Ran out of steam, but I think that covers everything I’ve felt over the last two weeks. From the heart. UNCROWNED, BABY! Let’s work. Shoutout Jerry. Almost blew it by missing him. That would’ve been bad.
