"Perhaps the most frightening aspect is that the industries laughing in the face of planetary and social destruction have made a clear calculus: they don’t need prosperous economies to profit...Cataclysm capitalism dispenses with this illusion altogether." theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

I'd like to add to some of the excellent points and insights of @GeorgeMonbiot, and the strange arguments, both put to George in this issue, and elsewhere. First, we can always make if far less worse. 1/🧵

One of the most frequent forms of pessimism I hear is "we can't change - there's too much greed, too much consumerism" But none of those are innate chgaracteristics in people. They aren't human nature They're the products of culture, and cultures can change very quickly

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer Exactly what I was thinking about after my post...this could then be at least partly due to emotional trauma from not being able to continue with the emotional indigenous worldview? I could imagine that someone has written about this🤔

It looks like @Keir_Starmer is a climate crisis denier. This is the term I use for people i.e. politicians, who claim to accept the science, but who refuse to treat it as the crisis and emergency, it is. All this stuff about "finger-wagging Net Zero extremists" is dangerous. 1/

🚨ICYMI: yesterday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer penned a piece in The Sun titled "I will not sacrifice Great British industry to the drum-banging, finger-wagging Net Zero extremists".

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer Yes, you may be right. But even the "idea people" do have emotions, just not so much regarding nature, or regarding their way of being in the world etc.. And accessing those existing emotions (pos/neg, hidden or not) could be a way to get something moving. Do you not think so?

@m_kanerva @Keir_Starmer I think people are confused, because the only tools they have to think about the situation, are words and ideas, that have been imposed on them. They are constrained by the ideas imposed on them. They are told things, like we must have economic growth. Why, who says so?

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer Becoming aware of the strong hidden emotions - unfortunately not so much about nature, but about future - can make one see how BAU is not the answer.

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer Especially soft climate denial is so widespread now - acknowledging the science, but still seeing no problem with BAU - and UK PM supporting billions for CCS is very much BAU. This is disastrous disavowal, most likely so in his case.

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer I'm talking about the basically good, and mostly sensible people, of course. Many in power are still like that, and I hope the UK PM is one of them. I'm not talking about the narcissists wanting as much power as possible. Their psychological problems are mostly too big to handle.

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer Great posts🙏 But I was talking about something different: the emotions behind most of our thoughts and action. And about how strong negative emotions lead to disavowal where one ends up acting against one's (or others') best interest. Currently very dangerous for those in power.

@SteB777 @Keir_Starmer @sallyweintrobe Until @Keir_Starmer (and others suffering from #disavowal) deal with their difficult emotions, he will always come up with some excuse to continue business as usual, to not wake up to the reality we are facing, to not use the enormous power he has to change things for the better

Four in five people around the world want their country to do more to combat climate change The public demand is there, but the political will is not Governments are not representing their people - it's time for #CitizensAssemblies
