Today, on Mother Language Day, we sincerely hope that the Belarusian language will cease to be a source of repression in Belarus. Never repeat our mistake: don't let the Russian language become a state one in your country. Even if it's one of five different languages, it will ruin them all. And it's not because language is bad itself but simply because Russia has weaponised it to colonise and kill other nations. The current reality in Belarus is that some political prisoners are beaten for using the Belarusian language behind bars. Kods are mocked at schools. Adults can't use it at work. Overall, Belarusian language is marginalized in the country, despite being one of the two official languages. If you want your child to visit kindergarten or schools where everything will be in Belarusian language... Good luck, especially if you live in the city. But how is that possible?! Year by year Moscow was creating that mentality where Belarusians believe Russian language is a sign of a better education and higher status. And yes, they succeed. And the result is catastrophic. Just please, don't repeat our mistakes.
