Using this as an example because of how strange I always found the English definition 😅. It's obviously a challenge for beginners and you will eventually learn through immersion, but having it in front of you is always a good thing!

Bilingual dictionaries are a good place to start when you begin learning but you miss out on so much nuance if you rely on them. Setting them aside and using dictionaries in my target language was easily the best decision I made for my own learning.

You should do everything in your power to not pay for learning languages. I have only ever spent around 90 PLN (≈25 USD) on learning Japanese - it was my university admission fee.

My tip to foreigners trying to scramble their way out of the 日本語上手^_^！ trap is to go all in on pitch accent before even trying to grind vocabulary, etc. A perfect pitch accent with an N3 vocabulary sounds way more native than a walking dictionary with weird inflection.
