@phillipdawson The shortcut TC is taking is assuming someone who’s appointed as an academic is a recognised expert in their space (p.s. the media does this too!). So I’d want to reframe your Q to consider whether academics equals expert, or if some other measure’s better? And if so, what is it?

@PhTaheri @gamerlearner Some institutions have discipline focused and education focused scholars, which goes in this direction. I think ultimately we all want to do a little of both (I think), but I do think there is room in the academy for more specialisation.

Fascinating! My student Max sent me this on the error Google’s new AI Bard made (in an ad of all places!) when asked for facts. A good reminder that with these tools you clearly need to be cautious for “fake news”, & an AI still can’t replace an expert.
