When Allyson Felix became pregnant, Nike threatened to cut her sponsorship contract by almost 70% because of her pregnancy. They told her: “You should know your place… and just run.” Amid all this, at seven months pregnant, Allyson had to undergo an emergency C-section due to a serious complication. Her baby girl spent over a month in the neonatal intensive care unit. But two years later, Allyson qualified for her fifth Olympic Games, with her daughter in the stands cheering her on. Allyson left Nike. And she founded her own shoe brand: Saysh One. At the Tokyo Olympics, she ran wearing her own sneakers, carrying the motto: “I know exactly where my place is.” With 11 medals, she surpassed Carl Lewis and became the most decorated American track and field athlete in history. And to all women, she gave this message: “I raised my voice and built this company for you, so that you’ll never have to train at 4:30 in the morning, five months pregnant, just to hide it from your sponsor.” ❤️

The cinema air was thick, heavy with the scent of buttered popcorn and that peculiar brand of collective anticipation you only encounter when a ghost is about to take the stage. I sat there, tucked into the velvet shadows of the back row, watching the screen flicker to life. Beside me, Zoe (she's 10) sat with her chin cupped in his hands, eyes wide, as if he were trying to swallow the light. They say legends don’t die; they just become box office receipts. From the dusty streets of Gary, Indiana, to the shimmering heights of global superstardom, the man is still breaking records from the afterlife. It is a masterclass in captivating storytelling, a two-hour journey that reminds you some stars are simply too bright for a grave to dim. In the flickering light, we see the jagged cost of perfection the way a father’s belt can turn a child’s song into a frantic plea for survival. The lesson is etched in every frame: greatness often grows in the dark, messy cracks of a broken childhood. It’s been a while since a movie grabbed me by the throat like this. Watching a ten-year-old from a generation that thinks "vintage" is last Tuesday fall in love with a man who was exactly ten when he first conquered the world? That was the real documentary. We went for the music, but we left with a quiet, heavy understanding of what it actually takes to become a king. Brilliant watch.

Ten years. A whole decade of chasing impact and, occasionally, our own tails. In April 2016, we birthed the Rotary Club of Kampala Metropolitan @KampalaMetro . I had the distinct, somewhat terrifying honor of being the Charter President. Back then, we weren’t this "stronghold of 64" you see today. We were just 26, one man short of the famous 27 who started the NRM bush war. (I like to joke that we were just too shy to start a guerrilla movement, so we settled for Service Above Self instead) But make no mistake, there was a war of our own. There were days I thought we’d never make it out of the trenches. We nearly folded before we even found our feet. We were small. Scrappy. Moving from Buloba, next to the Watoto Biira campus, handing out sanitary pads to schoolgirls, to visiting Sanyu Babies Home. It wasn't glamorous. It was dusty, exhausting, but it was ours. We grew up. Today, we aren't just handing out pads; we’re building maternal and child health facilities in Butolo, and kitting out neonatal centers with the kind of equipment that saves lives. Tonight, we celebrate the (now slightly older) men and women who journeyed from the brink of failure to ten years of service. Details are on the flyer. Come have a drink with us.
