Our mother is Italian so we would often spend Christmas there growing up. I have very vivid memories of my sister and I running around my grandmother’s tiled floor and being told off for not wearing socks, she always said we would get sick from walking on the cold tiles. My sister and I are the only people of colour in our entire extended family on our Mother’s side and grew up in a different country to everyone else, in a different culture, yet never felt othered or different to our cousins, which we’ve both always felt very grateful for :) This year my grandparents moved out of this apartment, it was on the 8th floor of a building with no lift, and unfortunately my grandparents’ co-morbidities have made it impossible to make the treacherous climb everyday, so this picture is extra special to me now."
