I am extremely excited to share that my book Make Your Own Job received the 2026 Merle Curti Award in Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians. It is a real honor. oah.org/2026/03/26/oah…

I understand the desire to make this dunk but the film is all but explicitly about how the U.S.'s amoral military behavior during its high-imperial era led irrevocably to its Trumpian self-destruction. Republicans have no reason to like it on thematic grounds.

Right wing culture really is in a nadir. The Odyssey has plenty of themes that would resonate with small-c conservatives - sacred tradition; home and rootedness; generational duty, etc. All ignored in favour of naked racial animus.

Funny that Nolan finally has a character look into the camera and say "I am the exact kind of liberal as Barack Obama" and still people struggle to accept that he has the same politics as almost everyone in his social milieu

The question of whether liberal norms such as pluralism can be self-enforcing permits different answers but is hardly trivial. In fact there's a guy with a new movie out who made a pretty good series of films about this involving a wealthy gentleman who dresses up as a bat

Of course the reality is that posing the question of the limits of tolerable disagreement on matters of value brings us up against fundamental and probably insoluble paradoxes of liberalism. The conservative Christian separatist colleges are more clear-eyed about this.

I think they should have a summit or something and figure out whether the academic humanities are too relativist or not relativist enough

@simontorracinta By all accounts this was the genius of Moby Dick—Rehearsed, posing this problem explicitly and almost miraculously overcoming it as the show unfolds

@madeleineebaker I've seen bad film, musical, and opera versions of Moby Dick and I've come to the conclusion it's paradoxically unadaptable despite its self-conscious theatricality. But if anyone could have pulled it off, it's Welles

This is my pick for the most important story of the year so far on trans civil liberties, especially for how clearly it illustrates how the same forces that menace our freedom are a threat to everyone regardless of gender wired.com/story/madison-…

The best cinematic adaptation of The Odyssey is Twin Peaks: The Return

@madeleineebaker I always thought the Return was about the Phenomenology of Spirit. Same diff, I guess
