The true character of a political movement isn’t revealed under pressure, it’s revealed when things are going well. I have seen this movie far too many times. That’s when you see who they really are. Like quietly dumping performing Muslim and a Jewish ministers from Cabinet.

#Breaking: Statement from #PaulKeating slamming Labor for allowing Ed Husic from the NSW Right to be dumped as a minister to elevate an MP from Richard Marles’ Victorian Right — a faction without ‘creativity and capacity’ — and the dumping of Mark Dreyfus. Brutal. #auspol

I was very honoured to be asked by Michael Samaras to launch his book, Anti - Fascists. A book about Jim McNeill. Jim was like many of his generation, including my grandfather. Working-class people, often with little formal education, but with a deep instinct for what was right and a clear understanding of what fascism meant: an ideology that sought to divide and diminish us based on the colour of our skin, eyes, or hair. Jim, my papou, and so many others stood against that. And they prevailed. Perhaps that history still echoes. Perhaps that’s part of the reason a political party was reduced to the size of a primary school classroom on the weekend. Because being perceived to align with Nazis after the dawn service, was never the path to a better future and Australians still know that.

@RameshSings Yeah, I’m so disappointed. I’ve always loved her, never seen her live. And this is her swan song 🥲

FWIW, my story on Peter Dutton's property portfolio was NOT information from a Labor "dirt unit". December 23 was when I asked the Age's Library to start pulling ASIC company records (see below) and Feb 7 was when I contacted the Clerk's office to look at his register.

This man has been gaslit by his own side, the LNP, and the far Left. This is the reality for Jewish Australians who hold political office , treated as expendable, easy targets, ignored. Yet, he continues to bring reason to the debate. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

6/ You want to help your counterpart make better-informed decisions and avoid miscalculation. All the trappings — the fancy titles, the elegant dinners, the shoe-banging-on-the-table — it’s all a vehicle to shape how your message will be transmitted and received.

10 years ago today #IlhamTohti was given a life sentence on baseless "separatist" charges for simply seeking to build bridges of understanding among ethnic communities. He must be freed and the PRC must end its genocidal efforts to erase #Uyghur culture and religion, say Chairs.

After a four year intermission, I'm back in Beijing. I've got my foreign reporter’s press card — and with that little piece of plastic, China’s four year black-listing of Australian media ended. Here's my first story back here for @australian theaustralian.com.au/world/back-to-…

Most comments here treat renters as a homogeneous group, but they are not. Many also assume renters are concentrated in inner-city suburbs. In fact, Broadmeadows, one of Melbourne's poorest suburbs, has nearly half of its residents renting—double the rate of any other tenure type. These renters are on extremely low wages, and their landlords are mostly the stereotypical mum-and-dad investors, likely living in nearby suburbs. Any additional pressure will force these landlords to sell, and the renters in Broadmeadows, many of whom are refugees, cannot afford to buy homes. It will take many of these renters over a decade to establish themselves in this country and maybe be in the position to buy a home. A typical journey for many refugees and newly arrived migrants. A similar dynamic exists in Glenroy, a suburb situated in Merri-bek.
Kos Samaras@KosSamaras

In the March quarter, Victoria saw a decline of 15,600 rental properties as landlords sold their assets. But who is buying? Not renters. To comfortably afford a median-priced house in Melbourne requires a minimum weekly wage of $2,820, equating to an annual taxable income of $146,640. This amount is more than double the city's median wage of $67,600. The majority of renters cannot even afford to buy a one bedroom apartment in Melbourne. Yet, this council wants to double down on this trend. Why are so many politicians so misguided on this issue? Forcing landlords to sell to wealthy buyers (whom renters can't compete with) ends up evicting renters from those properties. Maybe that’s actually their plan.

For 35 years, Chinese leaders have tried to erase all memory of the Tiananmen protests and the brutal massacre that crushed them. Last week I found a file of photos I took in Beijing in 1989, most of which I haven't seen since. I will post some now to commemorate those times.
