No market value. It earns her nothing. Her daughter, Jayashree, works at Without, manufacturing premium products from the very waste the scrap market rejects. Rani joined @madewith0ut over three years ago. She was the second informal worker we hired - first part-time, then full-time. Her husband died of a heart attack a decade ago. She became the sole earner for her children and her in-laws overnight. She found her way to us through @swachcoop. Today, she earns 3x more, has health insurance, and owns ESOPs in the company. She also, apparently, has a modelling era in full swing. Her story is just one story. But it's the story we're trying to make repeatable. That's what Foundation Without is - an extension of our mission that takes the social impact of our work and formalises it, multiplies it, without trading depth for scale. @deespeak tells it better than I can. She's been quietly one of India's most grounded voices on what real sustainability looks like - not the performative kind. Grateful she chose to tell Rani's story. Mixed textiles are one of the fashion industry's toughest gaps, and we are building a credible pathway for what typically gets ignored, landfilled, or burnt. With Upaya Social Ventures @UpayaSV , we are taking this work beyond proof points and into a pilot built for scale, strengthening both material outcomes and end-of-life accountability. Just as importantly, we are designing the system so that the communities who recover this waste are formally included, fairly paid, and treated with dignity. This pilot is designed to demonstrate what it takes to scale mixed textile recycling responsibly, technically, commercially, and socially.
