Excited to share my essay for @epw_in where I write about all things cities - memory, modernity, history, planning and resistance. There are bits about Delhi's urban (and epistemic) politics and eight lines of poetry at the end because why not! epw.in/journal/postsc…

1/ #CitiesInFiction now has a literary map. Every book in our list is pinned to the place it is set in. You can explore South Asian fiction as a geography — which cities have been written about, and which are still waiting. 👉 citiesinfiction.com/maps

We’re hosting the wonderful @ekta2993 at @socanth_ashoka & @CSGS_Ashoka on Feb 26 for a talk on Delhi’s urban villages. This draws from her book Sheher Mein Gaon & long term fieldwork in Sonipat. If you’re at Ashoka, drop by. You can join online too; details on the poster!

February 14 is a bruise. We woke to a silence that shouldn’t have existed; Dhruv and Vignesh, so alive in our corridors, suddenly gone. I hope they have found a gentleness the world here could not give. May we learn, for their sake, how to hold each other closer while we can.
The Edict@AshokaEdict

On 14 February 2025, the Ashoka University community lost two bright, thoughtful and deeply cherished undergraduate students. Dhruv’s political imagination and creativity, and Vignesh’s warmth and curiosity left lasting impressions on everyone who knew them.

At a time when public discourse rewards spectacle & moral posturing, he insists back on the ethical weight of thinking. Two videos which remind me why Neeladri Bhattacharya remains my favourite professor of all time. youtu.be/uVlltJuWZDI?si… youtube.com/watch?v=7nBG16…

It is winter, when Sylvia Plath makes sense again; a reminder that some writing ages better than trust. This decade-old essay by Janette Ayachi reflects on her clarity in naming the cost of seeing life as it is: a ghost of all the rotten figs. poetryschool.com/theblog/love-s…

@AadeshSpeaking Marx has that privilege/distinction, you and I simply don't, in a world which is saturated with academic work left, right and centre.

@AadeshSpeaking What's your point? I know where this is from, which is why the Marx reference in my tweet. It's just that when you're formally trained, conventions of clarity are important. Not everyone can & will be read irrespective of how clear their work is.

Which is not to say that teachers should not encourage or reward creativity, but that it cannot come at the cost of lucid & comprehensive writing. As an enabling figure, a teacher's role is to teach those fundamentals.

For @LSEImpactBlog, I write on how, in a publish-or-perish academy, boredom enables slow, reflective scholarship that produces meaningful research. Also a call that universities are built on teaching cultures as much as research metrics & publications. blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocial…

When I first left Kashmir, I thought distance would bring relief. It didn't. I carried Kashmir even in the way I flinched at loud sounds. Excited & slightly nervous to share my essay for Kashmir Lit where I write on guilt, memory, forgetting & belonging. kashmirlit.org/fragmented-geo…

@vitsviii This article builds against the evolution-oriented understanding of human memory & argues, instead, that the human brain is programmed to forget things, hence, making brain processes fundamentally random, unless actively put to to remember something. drive.google.com/file/d/1dnkp2p…

Serious question for literature people: what is a good introduction to literary theory book for someone like me (interested but not very knowledgeable or smart)? Complexity is not a problem.

@badmos_billa Not really. Experiences (and techniques) of belief and religious practices are. I think I'd rather call it an episteme (not in a Foucauldian sense, of course).
