When I was in my early twenties and working with Comic Bonbon, I didn’t just focus on manga, but I also helped with layout and writing for encyclopedias and article pages. At the time, the latest release in the series was the Famicom version of Mega Man 6. The settings and stories of the robots were becoming more intricate, but I think many kids who borrowed games from friends often had the cartridge without the instruction manual. Even kids playing Mega Man often didn’t know anything beyond what the game explained. Many thought Mega Man was a human, or that all the robots were created by Wily. When I worked on the encyclopedias and manga, my focus was on improving the readers' understanding and awareness of the setting. This led to projects like the encyclopedia appendix "Dr. Wily's Robot Introduction" and the 10-year anniversary encyclopedia, which provided an overview of the series’ settings and details related to the games. In the 10-year encyclopedia, I also planned a dialogue page with Inafune-san, Ikehara-sensei, Iwamoto-sensei, and myself, where we discussed the behind-the-scenes of the Mega Man series and shared what the creators and manga artists were thinking. When drawing one-shot Mega Man manga for special issues, I made it a point to depict that the robots in Mega Man 1 were sibling machines made by Dr. Light and that the robots in Mega Man 4 were made by Dr. Cossack, who was once threatened by Wily. When it came to drawing Protoman in my manga, I knew people were definitely wondering, "Who exactly is Protoman?" (In Mega Man 3, if you play to the end, you get a glimpse of his backstory, and in Mega Man 5, if you finish the game, you understand he’s not a villain... But just reading the instruction manual wouldn’t really tell you what kind of character he is. In Mega Man 6, all he does is give you the Energy Balancer in a hidden room.) So I thought long and hard about how to depict Protoman in a way that wouldn’t interfere with the future of the main series, yet still made people think, "This is the real Protoman!" I believed it was important to keep the aspect of Protoman where you don’t know if he’s an ally or enemy, and as a result, I created a character that left things open to interpretation. Looking back, he was a character who didn’t even speak in the games—he only whistled. So, I think I did a good job, all things considered. Anyway, that’s how I saw my role: to fill in the gaps for things that weren’t explained in the games and deliver them to readers through the encyclopedias and manga. Even now, seeing international translations of my work makes me feel like all the effort I put in when I was younger was worth it. When I look back at my old work, I sometimes cringe at how rough it was, but I still feel the passion behind it. I hope everyone reads it and grows to love Mega Man.
