On this day 45 years ago, Pope John Paul II was shot in Saint Peter’s Square. On May 13, 1981, Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Ağca fired four shots at Pope John Paul II during his weekly general audience. The attack happened exactly 64 years to the day that the Blessed Virgin Mary had first appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. The Pope survived.
