I love working with RNA-Seq data because you'll generate a 10-panel plot that contains more information than the human mind can possibly comprehend and you'll just be like "okay this is Figure 4" and move on

@erniebornheimer Increased effect might be favoured since it captures more of the distribution of causes. Perhaps we suffer so to be able to react to the most severe event which might occur, given the likelihood of the event (common) trades off with the survival impact of suffering in time (low).

How/why did humans evolve a capacity for suffering which is seemingly WAY stronger/deeper than is useful to motivate appropriate action?

@DJGould94 Isn't it precisely is the *striving* for the truth which drives our understanding forward? Those who seek truth learn it cannot be held, yet some continue to seek despite this. Maybe the solution to the paradox is that the arrow's end lies far beyond the point which it strikes.

Whenever I mention rat-people, others don't seem to find it compelling. The idea of a civilization of rats or pigeons in the ruins of our society; carrying on the lineage of "intelligence"; deciphering our legacy, writing their own; encountering the same problems, that's so cool.

@baralkabita1 Perhaps this is a blessing as much as it is a curse. Implored by circumstance to consider the perspective on two 'kinds' of person is to explore and experience the nature of what makes a 'kind' of person in the first place. I think this is valuable, to balance with the struggle.

@smartereveryday I try to avoid belief or disbelief when I can. Setting an arbitrary threshold puts the owness of my belief on the causes of that threshold, an infinite regress. Belief and disbelief are part of the whole. For any idea, the idea itself is real, my relationship to it matters less.

Serious questions: At what point do you choose to start believing something? What level of proof do you require? Is this level of proof higher if the topic requires changing your position on something? Why?

@TOEwithCurt I think you don't know. Isn't the *self* just a narrative? Constructed and reconstructed before and after story-arcs of note. I think if your story says "I know what I value and here's why" and other people's narratives of you cohere well enough, you're probably pretty content.

What do you value, and why? If it's something "positive" like "truth" etc., then do you truly feel you indeed value it? Or do you think that you simply WANT to value it / be seen as someone who values it? How do you know what you in fact *do* value vs. what you *think* you value?

@Yrouel86 @smartereveryday If one cannot see the reality for the story, they are deceived by an illusion. It doesn't matter what the story says, affirms, or denies. To be blind to the wisdom of a story because "it is not true" is the same as being blind to the shortcomings of a story because "it is true".

@dookie_williams Oxhide 2 is a very good feature length film with I think 9 total shots? All of them are static, so you can experience the raw action of dumpling-making without any fancy cinema tricks

@shadyroselives "It is strange. I am the only man in all Gethen that has trusted you entirely, and I am the only man in Gethen that you have refused to trust." The Left Hand of Darkness: when Ai learns that, what he perceived in Hearth as selfish irony and power games was transparent sincerity
