@TheStalwart Today's show was interesting, but (I'm biased here) you (as do many people) conflated the mainframe with the real problem, which is underinvestment in I/T maintenance. Nobody wants to maintain anything; building from scratch is much more exciting and visible.

@ArmandDoma @larsiusprime They already do that; the problem is that AI/Machine Learning/etc isn’t perfect. So you still need human intervention to deal with some of the content. killer app for AI that no one wants to talk about is an AI that can filter obscene content (graphic violence, sexual images of kids) without human intervention. Right now the business model of every social media company relies on basically giving people from poor countries PTSD

@Maaikees Big thing to me: actually want to do software testing. Lots of people see software testing as a stepping stone to “real development,” not a goal in itself. Granted, some of that is a result of a broken software development culture as well.

@evacide I work for IBM. While not as much today, sadly, a lot of the people I worked with in the past were hired before CS degrees were even a thing. They had degrees in philosophy, music, art. One had been a waitress. They’re the reason the IT profession exists today.

@felixsalmon @EmilyRPeck Could I suggest having someone come on the show to talk about COBOL and the like? The problem isn’t the language, the problem is lack of investment. And rewriting in today’s cool language doesn’t work either. COBOL makes a convenient scapegoat.

@SwiftOnSecurity It would never have worked; all that data is stored on mainframes. They don’t loose data. They had to update it for Mr. Robot, which was more accurate as to what would be required. But now we have GDPS with active-active.

@vice Your Cyber podcast, which I usually enjoy, was complete gibberish when it came to New Jersey’s use of COBOL. There’s nothing inherently bad about COBOL. Most of the world’s financial infrastructure is COBOL.
