Same thing with Il-lyri (Illyria). God/light speakers. Also the word serve/serf comes from Serb, the older name for Slavs.

In English, it's called Germany, because in the English or British cultural sphere the Latin meaning predominated in reference to that people: GERMANIA; in Romance languages, the predominant name is Alemania, land of the "Alamannen," the cultures that dominated the banks of the Rhine; but in the German language, the country is called Deutschland, land of those who speak the language of the people, because Deutsch etymologically means "language of the people."
