Support for lowering the voting age in NZ continues to increase! Fact: Only around a third of adults in Scotland supported a lower voting age before its introduction. After the 2014 election, politicians, analysts and the Scottish Youth Parliament hailed the decision as a success

How strongly do you support lowering the voting age to 16? 🗳️🤔

Great to see our friends from @makeit16nz at Council today and to continue to support this movement whose time is well overdue. Local government needs these younger voters and voices! thepost.co.nz/nz-news/360670…

@carsbeersboats We don’t have a position on the age of criminal responsibility. They are separate issues with separate considerations. Here’s what we said to the independent electoral law review (that recommended lowering the voting age in its final report)

English

@makeit16nz Do you feel that if a 16 year old can vote, they should be trialed as an adult for any crimes they commit?
English

@DoubleElnz @fonc Sure, you can find the full response here under "Income tax collected from 14-19-year-olds" ird.govt.nz/about-us/publi…. Also, sincere apologies the $92m figure is from FY21/22 not 22/23. We'd expect the FY22/23 figure to be higher due to inflation etc.
English

@DoubleElnz @fonc We sent an official information act request to IRD, so from them
English

@fonc 16/17YOs paid $92m in income tax in FY2022/23. Many work part time or even full time, often to support family. That’s not even mentioning GST etc
English

@makeit16nz Will they be paying tax? I’m guessing no, so they can vote and won’t suffer the consequences when a poor govt is elected. Doesn’t seem right.
English

@HankNicodemus Here’s what the experts at the Independent Electoral Law Review had to say about that based on the real science

English

@kiriceilidh @caedentipler The science says 16/17YOs are ready to vote: this was quoted by the Supreme Court

Odd... thought this government was really keen on debating things at select committee?
Make it 16@makeit16nz
The Government has asked the justice select committee to end consideration of the Bill to lower the voting age for local elections. They are shutting down public consultation. Young people will not even get a say on our own voting rights. That is a disgrace.
English

@asciidude lol yes, a lot (until they put the Bill in front of the house too late)
English

@makeit16nz Did you whinge when Labour didn't do it either?
Welcome to democracy - the majority decide. Not a few kids.
English

We are incredibly disappointed by the Government’s refusal to listen to the experts, 7 of our largest councils, councillors across the country and young people ourselves and lower the voting age to 16

🧵 The final recommendations of the Independent Electoral Review released today would set New Zealand on course for a permanent left-wing government.
