We know the form of an emotion by its face, but what about its bones? What shape do the skeletons of our feelings take, what laughter lines lay beneath the skin, and how do we see our ancestry through more than just its form? What are all these thoughts and feelings that make up us built upon? Art is many things, but perhaps most of all it is a desperate attempt to answer that most frustrating of age old questions, what are we? It is an attempt to answer this in all its forms, from the grandest to the most everyday. It sees us visualise the feeling of paradoxical well-being that inhaling a sunset and cigarette bring, not just the recollection of light lights reflected form. It makes physical material of the completely intangible. A crucible in which the most nebulous of notions can take such an understandable shape as to be met with cries of "well of course, why didn't I think of that". Art is that most intense and lifelong of experiments, looking to test the theory of life. The work of @post_screw and @malaguts speak deeply to this, this question of "us". Throughout the gallery space of @ArtverseParis supported by @caravanapresent they explored the bones of myth that culture dresses, extrapolate how our own self image is rendered each epoch, and animate the questions that drive our souls in their ceaseless pursuit to understand themselves. The sculptures of Flávio adorn walls in ceramic and 3d print, interwoven amongst each other, the forms organic, bone like, familiar yet removed, not quite alien Diegetic to our world, but unfamiliar to it. Despite the connotations of their mounting, they feel less like big game trophies, and more like fossils that were discovered mid renovation, now jutting from the wall, too rare and beautiful to move, the whole space built to preserve and present them. In some ways that is what they are, the preservation and elevation of culture metamorphized into soemthing solid by time, chemichal, and chance. In stark contrast to this a large screen stands on another of the walls. Here an animated exploration of self is barely contained in light and glass. The screen is flat but it may as well be as textured as Flavios sculptures for the way in which @post_screw work pushes out from it. The sound that accompanies this work lends to this feeling, it rises alongside the figures in the render, they are barely contained in the digital. At any moment the distortions that pluck at the forms on screen are going to extend to those same screens edges, and beyond. Ripping through the space, distorting, defying, and redefining form. For me on that screen is a hard question, the source of all this barely contained physics defying energy, not just one of who or what are we in the broad sense of the cosmic void. But who am I as contained within the language and knowledge of others. What is my love called, my gender, in anothers tongue and eye? How am i both so inextricably intertwined with this notion of love defined by form, and simultaneously so adamant of love beyond form. What parts of these desires are tamped down or amped up by and expectation placed upon us five generations before. The difficulty of these questions is laid bare in the onscreen tension, it is not just an endless assault on the senses, it rises and falls, areas find calm and tension emerges in others. There are reprieves, nights before days. There is clarity in all its shock, the flash of text, of thought. There is one of the great questions of self, somehow rendered real and put to the screen and sound. Yes both these artists and their work go a long way to making real the question of a million questions. What are we? who? - My thanks to @exchgART @bonk_inu Art Masters, @WaitHopeFound @mallowdotart and everyone whos support made these events possible
