My article on AIR CONDITIONING just dropped in the fab new issue of Discourse. Read to hear me wild out on image ideologies, mass production, atmospheric work discipline, a fire at MoMA, conservation handbooks, macaroni factories, & more muse.jhu.edu/pub/27/article…

I do think Istvan Meszaros figured out a lot of stuff about capitalism's progressive and regressive tendencies as a global system and it's largely because he read that one very clarifying letter from Marx, which is silly but true.

@BigMeanInternet My unscientific impression based on teaching a couple hundred kids a year: different demographics. There’s also a middle ground of kids who are ambivalent. But I find that the ones who are vocally anti- are not using it for classroom work.

Is there a good article that works from the premise, "If students don't like AI, why are they using it?"

@BigMeanInternet my sense is that gen z tends to feel this way about much of the consumer technology they grew up with. "i'm addicted to my phone but also wish i lived in the 90s so i didn't have one" is something i hear every semester.

@nuhawrites I don’t teach composition but whenever I imagine what to do in that scenario I have a hard time of it. I do not envy everyone trying to figure out how to teach that absolutely critical class and skill in this moment!

@malahern What do you suggest for composition where the main point is learning to compose research papers?

I have seriously considered the following for large lectures: Final grade based on a combination of (tough) exams and (easy) in-class activities. Writing a paper is optional. Not extra credit. Optional. Won’t affect grade one bit. The reward is deep, engaged feedback
yana@Madame_Ennui

As a TA last semester I had to grade 40 final papers, and progressively realized many were AI just bc of how ridiculously similar they were. The problem was that going through and checking were taking 20x longer than grading and I was getting paid pocket change to grade

Her favorites were the GPO documentary NIGHT MAIL, the Faith and John Hubley film MOONBIRD, and any of the Norman McLaren films with dots and blooping sounds

@malahern @freganmitts I fully believed this was real since that's the exact name that a famous gift giving/party planner known only to rich aunts would have

Some of you are good at Mother's Day gifts. If this is you, please help me out!! What do you get for a mid-to-late 60s woman whose main/sole interests are fashion and beauty, but just gets whatever she wants anyways and also has much better taste than you?

@BigMeanInternet @beingmmm Do they not exist (e.g., we have to use the same old apps but fewer people are being paid to develop/maintain them)? Or are people for some reason reluctant to call an app AI-built? Or is it possible that the wrong audience is seeing this? I am genuinely so curious...!

@beingmmm I'm not arguing on Twitter this month, really just looking to try filling some empty home screen space with one of the new and exciting apps but no one will tell me what they're called.

What are some consumer programs built with AI that have seen big user uptake? Is there a poster child for this new generation of apps?

I feel so bad for the kids these days. The price spread between the donation bin and luxury consignment has totally collapsed. In my youth, if you knew even a little bit about fashion, this gave you enough information asymmetry to utterly dominate your local charity stores.
keysmashbandit@keysmashbandit

Horrible news: the small town boutique thrift store recognized the unlabeled Issey Miyake piece in my size and priced it accordingly

16yo said the 'con' in 'con man' and 'con artist' is short for 'confidence' which I didn't know, and suggested that AI's aura of confidence is just robot con artistry. Seems right to me.

There is a tendency now to treat extroverts like we are horrifying weirdos but for most of human history those of you who would prefer to eat breakfast silently and alone are the outliers
