I want everyone in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to work, to save up their money, and to follow their dreams. To have dignity at home, in faith and in work. On Monday, I made my keynote speech as Leader of @ReformUKScot. 👇

We cannot let these ideologues have another five years dismantling Scotland’s once world-class school system. John Knox would be spinning in his grave. Labour are just as bad the SNP or Greens. They’re doing the same to England right now. To restore common sense, vote Reform.

At Edinburgh Southern hustings, SNP candidate @DeidreBrock has just said that reading, writing, and arithmetic is not something she subscribes to in education, because modern kids have calculators. This has understandably caused consternation in the audience.

The other party leaders can call me whatever names they like. But Scots have had enough of politicians who ignore their concerns because it makes them feel “uncomfortable”. They’ve had enough of being shut down by confected outrage. On May 7th their voices will be heard.

So it’s confirmed: the SNP want to raise your taxes after the election. Again. There's just no other way to fund their gimmicks. For sensible taxes, lower than England's, the only choice is Reform.

Doctors absolutely have a duty to treat their patients. I made that very clear in my speech. But loopholes are being exploited by opportunists from all over the world: to come illegally via France, claim asylum, and so immediately get free healthcare from our NHS. This is not just unfair on Scots already unable to get a GP appointment or stuck on a waiting list, and on the taxpayers who fund the NHS. It is also unfair to rule-following immigrants who come to this country legally and pay the NHS surcharge, and unfair even to tourists, who must also pay their way. We are a welcoming, generous country. But we cannot provide a free health service for the world. The rules need to be fair.

'Healthcare is a human right, regardless of asylum status' Senior GPs in Scotland have issued a pointed response to remarks by Malcolm Offord on healthcare provision for asylum seekers, warning that such an approach risks undermining both public health and long-term cost efficiency 👇

Thank you for covering this issue @_RebeccaMcCurdy, but this is incorrect. It's not that refugees are being given temporary accommodation ahead of other homeless people. It's that social housing is having to be used for temporary accommodation - predominantly for refugees - instead of finding permanent housing for people already on the general social housing waiting list. This is because of the legal duties you mention - duties that are unique to Scotland, and very much a devolved matter.

For sensible income taxes - lower than England’s - the ONLY choice on May 7th is Reform. To see how much more of your earnings you’d get to keep under our plans, we’ve coded a wee tax calculator: reformuk.scot/tax-calculator/

Scotland has a housing emergency. The supply of private rental accommodation is lower than it was ten years ago, rents are sky-high, and young people are being forced to sacrifice flexibility and to take on mortgages with high interest rates because the only sure way to find the home they want is to buy instead. The SNP have piled regulation after regulation onto the private rental sector, raising the costs and risks of providing long-term lets, creating a perverse incentive for landlords to pivot to short-term letting, and incentivising build-to-rent developers to concentrate on building less risky short-term accommodation like hotels and student flats. Scotland’s towns and cities are gradually turning into staging posts for a succession of transient visitors, rather than cohesive neighbourhoods for people to put down roots. And the SNP today pledged to make it worse, by giving private renters first refusal for a period of time “at a fair market rate” when their landlord wants to sell up. It makes for a nice soundbite to say you’ll give renters more of a chance to stay in the place they’re living. But John Swinney has once again failed to think through the incentives. By allowing renters to purchase the property at a fixed price before there’s a closing auction to determine the property’s market value, he would force landlords to sell for less than the property is actually worth. Landlords will leave the sector in droves ahead of the change, tenants will be turfed out, the rental supply will fall, rents will rise still higher, and the housing emergency will get even worse. Homelessness, already well beyond crisis levels, will increase even further. To bring down rents, we must get the incentives right to boost supply. Reform will not only build more social housing and allow more private housing to be built, but we will repeal the SNP’s damaging regulations for all new tenancies, while keeping the terms of existing tenancies unchanged. Reform will unleash the private rental sector to make homes both plentiful and more affordable for the Scots who need them most.

Private right to buy? Surely you’d not force people to sell their property at a discount, John. There soon won’t be anything left to rent! The way to bring down costs is by increasing supply: building more social housing and allowing more private housing to be built.
John Swinney@JohnSwinney

Too many young people are paying more in rent than they would on a mortgage – but can’t save for a deposit. If re-elected, my SNP government will change that. ✅ New right for private renters to buy their home ✅ £10,000 support for first-time buyers The SNP is on your side.

Scotland needs sensible income taxes. First Labour pledge to punish hospital consultants and GPs with children, by steepening the tax cliff edge at £100k. Now the timid Tories say that by 2031 they'd only tinker with some marginal rates – the amount you lose for every extra £1 earned. Check out the graph below, which shows the extent of their plan, and compare to what a Reform government in Holyrood would do in just our FIRST budget by cutting all Scottish income taxes below England’s. Timid tinkering just isn’t enough to get growth. Only Reform is willing to do what it takes.
