One of my favorite things about homeschooling is all the time available for forming the mind and the imagination through reading real books. Our final day of school for '25-'26 was spent finishing up books at a fun coffee shop. My 6th grader was deeply absorbed in finishing The King's Fifth. And I finished my own reread of it late that night, after he was in bed. Happy summer vacation, everyone! (And yes, that's @malcolmguite 's tremendous new Arthurian ballad there in the corner; our current family read-aloud, which my kids say is "so awesome.")

"Just the walk from the house to the hut is a kind of shedding, a letting go of all the noisy concerns and anxieties of contemporary life which buzz around one’s head like flies." Two things: 1. LISTEN to this. It’s the best Audible credit I’ve ever spent. I bought two copies as a result: one to keep and read, one as a gift. 2. I can’t remember that a book has ever made me cry, but @malcolmguite has managed to speak and draw water from these stones.

We saw his light break through the cloud of glory Whilst we were rooted still in time and place As earth became a part of Heaven’s story And heaven opened to his human face. A Sonnet for Ascension Day malcolmguite.wordpress.com/2026/05/14/a-s…

The variety of Arthurian literature means that if Malory doesn't work for you, you can try Sir Gawain and the Green Knight or the Alliterative Morte Darthur or Tolkien's The Fall of Arthur or TH White or, if you want the newest thing, Malcolm Guite (@malcolmguite), Galahad and the Grail. Because Malory is not everyone's cup of tea!

@mjjhoskin I read the Mort Darthur and is was great and completely unbearable after a certain point. How do you do it?
