One of my favorite things about homeschooling is all the time available for forming the mind and the imagination through reading real books.
Our final day of school for '25-'26 was spent finishing up books at a fun coffee shop. My 6th grader was deeply absorbed in finishing The King's Fifth.
And I finished my own reread of it late that night, after he was in bed.
Happy summer vacation, everyone!
(And yes, that's @malcolmguite 's tremendous new Arthurian ballad there in the corner; our current family read-aloud, which my kids say is "so awesome.")

"Just the walk from the house to the hut is a kind of shedding, a letting go of all the noisy concerns and anxieties of contemporary life which buzz around one’s head like flies."
Back in his writing hut, @malcolmguite follows Wendell Berry’s advice

Two things:
1. LISTEN to this. It’s the best Audible credit I’ve ever spent. I bought two copies as a result: one to keep and read, one as a gift.
2. I can’t remember that a book has ever made me cry, but @malcolmguite has managed to speak and draw water from these stones.

'Twas a delight to talk with @amjuster about his new translation of Petrarch's Canzoniere for Christians Reading Classics pod @mereorthodoxy. Just like Petrarch, he too loves a Laura, and his Laura was the tech support who made this episode happen! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pet…

We saw him go and yet we were not parted
He took us with him to the heart of things
The heart that broke for all the broken-hearted
Is whole and Heaven-centred now, and sings,

We saw his light break through the cloud of glory
Whilst we were rooted still in time and place
As earth became a part of Heaven’s story
And heaven opened to his human face.

@BurlHorniachek @mjjhoskin I haven’t read it but Maggie’s reading it right now and says it’s very good

@mjjhoskin @malcolmguite I have heard that Rosemary Sutcliff's Arthurian trilogy does a great job of updating Malory for modern readers.

The variety of Arthurian literature means that if Malory doesn't work for you, you can try Sir Gawain and the Green Knight or the Alliterative Morte Darthur or Tolkien's The Fall of Arthur or TH White or, if you want the newest thing, Malcolm Guite (@malcolmguite), Galahad and the Grail. Because Malory is not everyone's cup of tea!

@mjjhoskin I read the Mort Darthur and is was great and completely unbearable after a certain point. How do you do it?
