On the wake of 9/11, Senator Joseph Biden addressed an audience about the Bush Administration’s talks to withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM).
The arms control treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union on the limitation of the ABM systems used in defending areas against ballistic missile-delivered nuclear weapons.
He listed a multitude of reasons for strongly opposing President Bush’s plans to withdrawal—
- The massive budget that would come at the expense of depleting social security, a consequence they’d have to deal with ten years down the road.
- Billions spent on a missile defense shield that would be better spent on modernizing our forces, building a stealthier, more mobile, more self sufficient military; preparing the troops for the wars of the 21st century. Money that would be better spent on improving retention rates and living conditions in the barracks. That conventional wars were more realistic, whether they come from the land, sky, or sea.
- The future impacts on foreign relations. That pulling out of the deal would look as bad faith and would impact relations with Russia and deter them from joining NATO. That building the defense shield would start an arms race against Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Japan, etc with the most dangerous unstable weapons of the world. That pulling out of the treaty would be a grave mistake, one that would impact the lives of the children and grandchildren of that generation.
