I am defending my thesis next week, if you are around Stanford, please feel free to join! Here is the abstract and details! I will talk about several unpublished works on latent circuits subserving neural manifolds, how to train RNNs with millions of parameters on laptops with less than a minute and use those to identify brain regions from neural activities, and how we used all these to answer a half-a-century old question about visual short-term memory recall. Bonus: Using RNNs trained on large-scale neural recordings (~10k), we found specific group of neurons predicted by the latent circuits and targeting those made mice hallucinate memory-guided behaviors! I love being a PhD student. it feels like I’m expected to be miserable or overwhelmed. but as a first-gen student, I’ve had to overcome a lot worse to get here. to read and write and learn for a living feels like a gift that I hope I never take for granted, inshallah 🙏🏽
