The case landed in Judge Kazi’s courtroom. During one hearing, the court took a short break. Tony stepped into the toilet. Judge Kazi’s clerk quietly followed him. With both answering the nature's call, the clerk casually said, “Judge sahab ka thoda khayal rakh loge to faisla aapke favour mein aa jayega.” Tony asked, “Matlab?” “₹25 lakh,” the clerk replied. Tony refused. The case was adjourned for that day. Two days later, Tony got a call. It was the same clerk: “Soch lo. Baad mein mat rona ki faisla favour mein nahi aaya.” Tony disconnected. The clerk kept calling, eventually bargaining down to ₹15 lakh. Fed up, Tony went to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). They told him to call the clerk and agree. Tony did. The clerk fixed a location to collect the money. Tony showed up with the cash, and with ACB right behind him. The clerk was caught red-handed. When confronted, the clerk said, “Main toh judge sahab ke kehne par kar raha tha.” ACB asked him to call the judge. He did. He told Judge Kazi that the money had been received. Kazi said “Good, kal mujhe de dena.” But “kal” never came, because the clerk was now in jail. Judge Kazi kept calling and messaging him, probably wondering if the clerk had run away with the cash. ACB read every message, now solid evidence. They raided the judge’s house. It was locked. Judge Kazi had absconded. This isn’t the exception; it’s the norm. Every lower-judiciary judge has a vishesh sahyogi, the clerk, typist, peon, runner, driver, whoever, whose job is exactly this: to demand and collect bribes on the judge’s behalf. And when they get caught, they’re expected to sacrifice themselves and never name the judge, because once the issue cools down, the judge usually pulls them out with their influence.
