"The truth needs to be shown." The husband of a man who died in hospital last month after receiving an “incompatible” blood transfusion has told the Irish News he wants an inquest into his loved one's death. "If I don't do this, who is next?" he said. Charlie Begley (55), from Belfast, died on January 23 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, around two months after he was given the wrong blood. His husband David O’Prey (66) has shared a letter from the Trust, confirming the “never event” is being investigated. Mr O'Prey is now demanding answers on how the transfusion happened and whether it shortened his husband’s life.

Detectives investigating an arson attack in south Belfast on Sunday night in the Vernon Court area have said they are "thankful" three people, who were inside the home at the time, were able to escape unharmed. Detective Sergeant Long has described the scene, explaining that late last night a bin had been deliberately set alight at the front door of the residential property, causing "considerable" damage. The people inside the home escaped unharmed through the back of the property. Detective Sergeant Long said: "We could potentially have been dealing with much more serious consequences this morning and are treating this as arson with intent to endanger life.”

Daniel McAfee, head ranger of the Glens Red Squirrel Group, has spent 18 years helping to protect red squirrels across Co Antrim. His passion for red squirrels was sparked back in 1993, when as a young child he saw a red squirrel hanging from the nuts he had left out for the birds in his grandmother's back garden. She had mistaken the red squirrel for a ferret, and called out to her grandchildren: "See, there's that ferret again." Daniel joined the Glens Red Squirrel Group (GRSG), a community-led, registered charity, in 2008 to ensure the species remained part of the Glens’ landscape. “When the group was advertised my granny said she was too old to join but that I should sign up, so I did and I haven’t looked back since.” 🎥 Mal McCann and Dylan Hegarty
