Our article is finally out! The longest stretching intervention to date lead by @mamoltub investigating the effects of static stretching on muscle-tendon morphological and mechanical properties, neural activation, and contractile function. @nih_sognsvann

For the past 20 years we have been told that static stretching before exercise can reduce muscle strength, power and balance 🏃🏽 ECU Professor of Biomechanics, Anthony Blazevich, believes this view to be outdated: s.ecu.edu.au/2NrB0UR

@GregLehman Thanks for the interest in my research! The main paper has now been resubmitted after revision, hopefully available shortly.

@AdamMeakins Umm no, most dancers cannot quit stretching. They are just changing towards more active/dynamic modalities, particularly in warm up. Static stretching often remains in specific phases of dancer workout and long term periodisation. @TonyBlazevich

If professional ballet dancers can quit stretching, I think its safe to say you can too!

@GregLehman @simensletten There's your PhD project. :) Forces, strains++ on misc MTU components, with misc modalities, was in my project description. Seeing that pro ballet dancers do not seem to have stiffer Achilles tendons, I guess that stretching alone isn't a sufficient stimulus. Add loading rate??
English

@mamoltub @simensletten Do you think the daily strain would be less than 4.5% though? I guess what I'm most curious about is what is the difference in strain in the same tendon during a max passive stretch and a max iso contraction. If they are similar then it means strain can't be the...1/

@GregLehman Maybe you've already seen it, but I thought you'd be interessted in this. A dissertation by @mamoltub on "effects of long-term stretching training
on muscle-tendon morphology, mechanics and function" brage.bibsys.no/xmlui/bitstrea…

@GregLehman @simensletten It is possible that our indirect measurements are overestimated, that the tendon stiffness methods do not have sufficient sensitivity... But also, perceived pain during self-administered stretches was less than during the tests, so the daily strain was probably less than 12‰.
English

@mamoltub @simensletten That is what I find interesting. The Bohm/Arampatzis work suggests you need 4.5% strain from a contraction to catalyze tendon stiffness changes. You noted this too. But, if a passive stretch attains 12% strain then is strain the true stimulus to create mechanotransduction
English

@GregLehman @simensletten Thanks a lot for the feedback! Tendon strain measurements seem to vary quite a bit with method... Need to find short tendons or a huge US probe to catch all in one field of view. With our methods we had individual strain values up to approximately 12% during maximal stretches.
English

@simensletten @mamoltub versus tendon strain during ramped isometric contractions (typically 4.5-5.5% if greater than 70%) but I haven't found anything. Any idea how much strain a typically stretch induces in the achilles tendon? Thanks.
