As you can imagine, Tom is grieving her loss and will be making a statement later to honor her life. Grizzly 399 was part of our family, and we will forever call her Queen of the Tetons.

It is with a heavy heart that we must share the news of the passing of our beloved matriarch and hero, Grizzly 399. At this time, we are uncertain of the condition or whereabouts of her yearling cub, Spirit, and we remain hopeful for the cub’s safety. #grizzly399 #399

Things are starting to really green-up in the Tetons, as summer weather seems to have arrived, at least temporarily. Just after sunset last Saturday I was fortunate enough to watch Grizzly 399 and Spirit as they gorged on fresh clumps of clover. Happy Friday!

As I'm sure you all know by now, the northern lights two weeks ago were ones for the ages. The only other times I have seen equally impressive displays was in the Arctic, so being able to watch the show from my backyard was incredible. Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

Finding wildlife subjects during winter isn't always an easy thing to do, though the most reliable are usually the bighorn sheep that spend the winter on the National Elk Refuge. This impressive ram was following closely behind some ewes with the rut in full swing. Happy Friday!

It finally looks like winter in the Tetons, as we've had a series of storms in the last week, like most of the country. This was the last clear sunrise on Saturday before the storms started. Now there's more than another foot of snow on the ground. Happy Friday!

This young bull moose was a recent backyard visitor. As you can see we really haven't gotten any snow in Jackson Hole, but there is finally some in the forecast. Happy first Friday of 2024!

Paul gave me my first photography lessons, specifically how to photograph birds in flight so that I could document migrating waterfowl as part of a research project. Looking back, I’m greatly indebted to the University of Nebraska and grateful for this special honor.

I am honored and humbled to have been given an honorary doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in my home state. I was the first Mangelsen to attend University.

Like many students, I lived at home and worked when I wasn’t studying. Later went on to the master’s program in zoology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I met my lifelong mentor, friend, and the person who changed the direction of my life, the late Dr. Paul Johnsgard.

I thought I'd share an image from my trip to Italy last month. While out cruising through the country side of northern Italy, we came upon this small vineyard near the town of Castel Rocchero. I thought it was deserving of a stop and few pictures. Happy Friday!

This image of Grizzly 399 was taken when her quadruplets were still cubs-of-the-year. Grand Teton National Park’s most famous grizzly bear, known by her research number 399, has raised litter after litter along the Oxbow Bend of the Snake River. She is a true marvel of nature.
