Artfight prohibiting using posable 3D models is so dumb, I've made use of them in many of my pieces and it's odd to outright discount your art for it as it's been a common tool for years

I had a convo with irl artist friend about tracing 3d models, it really does depend on why you use models from the start. But that's only on the context of improving in fundamentals. This is just supposed to be a fun art event not a full fledged contest LOL

I just don’t like their take because it sounds like they’re suggesting taking away 3D models entirely if you so much as trace it even a little. Tracing models is fine so long as you have fundamental and anatomical knowledge

@GrongoA Not exactly. Not everybody learns the same way or at the same pace. And when it comes to 3D models it really depends on HOW you use it (I.e. whether you lack fundamental or anatomical knowledge.) so no, they’re not 100% right. They’re suggesting taking it away entirely regardless

@mangobea @kuso_otoko @NGreentail That's what "tracing" means. This whole controversy exposed a bunch of people and I can't hide my shock upon seeing the sheer amount of people that actually use 3D models.
Same people will go on to complain about AI stealing artists' work and just mindlessly copying what it sees

@megaupsilon Well if you come around to it just know that you’re not obligated to dish out loads of of artwork. If you’re comfortable doing one or two that’s fine as well! When you get comfy it’s pretty fun. You can just attack people you believe are friendly if that helps. I do that lol

I think you should still do it anyway. I’ve done it for 3 years, this year might be my 4th, and I’ve only ever really had good interactions. There’s still plenty of friendly artists on the platform who are appreciative of any art you give them and adore it

This is why I’m always too scared to ever join artfight btw. All the gatekeeping really puts me off. When it comes to drawing I really don’t consider myself an artist. I just do it for fun. But people online are so gung-ho on things being absolutely perfect.

@mangobea @NGreentail It feels like they're trying to push beginner or learning artists off the platform tbh. Weeding out "lower quality" art made using a "crutch" (stupid word for it) so those artists might quit or leave. And then other, "higher quality" artists are more common.

@mangobea @NGreentail So, yes and no, but one size DOES NOT't fit all. You can call it a crutch but that doesn't mean it's wrong to use or that everyone NEEDS to get rid of it at some point. it will 100% depend on how and what you do with your art. Speaking in absolutes like this is cringe.
