Armed with good intentions, we have created a Formation Gap in America’s youth – a devastating divide between intellectual development and heart development. A gap between head knowledge and heart formation. A gap between the problem and the solution.

When a generation accepts a lie, the next generation rejects the Truth.

When we entertain our children, without training them, they don’t learn how to take care of themselves. Rather than becoming self-reliant, they become dependent on us.

The heart has a mind of its own.

What fills the heart ultimately shapes the person. The cultivation of the heart must be central to the formation of future generations.

The world attempts to keep us in the mirror, doesn’t it? But the longer we gaze in a mirror, the more lost we become in ourselves. Either the flaws become exaggerated, or the ego becomes enlarged.

What psychology attributes to the mind, Scripture attributes to the heart.

The heart, biblically understood, is not merely emotion. It is the control center of the person. If education ignores the heart, it neglects the very place from which decision-making and behavior originates.

Nearly 70% of adults aged 44 and younger have suffered from mental illness in the past 12 months or deeply care about someone who has. More awareness and more therapy hasn’t solved this epidemic. It is in examining our hearts that the answer to this crisis will be found.

Every time I look into the eyes of a child, I am reminded that the decisions I make today will determine whether our children will have a country they can enjoy or one they must endure. I hope you feel that same sense of responsibility for their future.

On this Memorial Day, remember, remember, lest we forget the brave ones, the strong ones, the ones who gave up their lives that we might live in freedom.

There is a battle raging for the hearts of our children. Unless we fortify their hearts with truth, they will not be able to withstand the assault.

Children are often given facts and figures without moral anchors, and freedom without wisdom, resulting in anxiety, confusion, and despair among today's teens.

Unlocking the heart opens the mind.

In the brief window when a child's worldview is formed, the one who reaches the heart shapes who the child will become.

In the pursuit of filling young minds, we have starved their hearts.
