STATEMENT: 1. We are outraged by the District Attorney’s decision to reintroduce the death penalty in Los Angeles County. As Public Defenders, we push back on injustice and state violence every single day. And there is nothing more abhorrent than state-sanctioned murder.

In the news Feb. 17-21, 2025 — @sfdefender successfully challenged an unfair sentencing provision, asserted that laws and rights will help stem the president’s deportation efforts, and called proposed legislation to weaken California state Sanctuary law “dead in the water.” 🧵

Today, we honor the legendary Public Defender Jeff Adachi whom we lost too soon. In 2016, when our country was in a similar situation, Jeff reminded us that, "We all have to be public defenders now to defend our own humanity." We keep that torch lit @sfdefender every day!

@SanQuentinNews Our Feb. feature is Hospitality House, located in the Tenderloin, empowering ppl living in poverty to overcome their circumstances. They trained our staff in de-escalation & crisis intervention that centers our shared humanity to keep clients/visitors/staff feeling heard & safe.

For January, we’re shouting out @SanQuentinNews, which helps keep incarcerated folks informed about our Freedom Project and how it can assist those who are eligible for sentence reductions and parole hearings. Together, we’re working to restore hope and reduce mass incarceration.

We kicked off #BlackHistoryMonth strong w/a celebration of Black excellence @sfdefender dating back to 1961 that’s grown into a force for liberation. Public defenders are on the front lines defending civil rights to overcome systems of oppression. Our diversity is our strength.

Public defender caseloads are growing, and our offices are underfunded nationwide. In SF, in addition to our mental health and immigration cases, we get >80 percent of the cases filed by the DA (which benefits from SFPD resources) but only 60 percent of the funding. 3/
