It’s actually an interplay of a number of different forces. One is the position of the moon above the earth (sub lunar point), another is the relative spin of the earth, another is the harmonic resonance of propagating waves through the ocean, and another is the location of the continents and how they disrupt the tidal forces. Even better…. Gravity perfectly explains tides. Tide is higher on the side of the earth facing the moon because large bodies of water are attracted to the moon. It is also higher on the opposite side of the earth because the earth is being pulled towards the moon more than the ocean on the far side…. Thus two tides per moon cycle.
