I say this without any tinge of exaggeration - MOST religious people are really not good people. To say it most midly, they are not noble people. They only try to maintain a benign exterior to match their outward religiosity but that is just PIETY and nothing more. Being pious doesn’t make one a good person. Piety and natural benevolence are two very different things. Genuinely good people and infact, the best humans are NEVER found in the religious houses.
