Ethiopia has firmly rejected the “baseless accusations” made by Sudanese officials during a recent joint press conference, escalating tensions amid the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
In a press statement issued today, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the claims by the Sudanese Armed Forces and government representatives were unfounded. While reaffirming the “historic and enduring bond of friendship” between the peoples of the two countries, Addis Ababa accused elements within Sudan’s conflict of violating Ethiopia’s territorial integrity and national security.
The statement alleged that TPLF-affiliated fighters have been active in the Sudanese conflict and claimed that Sudanese forces have provided them with “arms and financial support,” facilitating incursions along Ethiopia’s western border. It further asserted that Sudan has become “a hub for various anti-Ethiopian forces,” suggesting that these developments are influenced by external actors.
“It is evident that these hostile actions, as well as the recent and earlier series of allegations by officials of Sudanese Armed Forces, are undertaken at the behest of external patrons seeking to advance their own nefarious agenda,” it reads.
Despite the accusations, Ethiopia struck a conciliatory tone toward the Sudanese people, emphasizing solidarity during what it called “difficult times.” The government reiterated that there is no military solution to the Sudanese crisis and urged all parties to pursue dialogue.
Ethiopia called for an immediate humanitarian truce, followed by a sustained ceasefire and an “independent, inclusive and transparent civilian-led dialogue” aimed at restoring civilian rule and achieving long-term peace.
