Big results can come from simple conversations. I once bumped into @marcoitn a golfer who enjoys resistance training, but seeking info online was using 5x5 type programming. Hard to sustain in-season. I simply advised 5x2-3 might a more appropriate set rep scheme for inseason. Keep everything else the same & see how you fare. The result was night & day. And I’ve been helping Marco with his training ever since.

Someone was debating with me that golf fitness sits in a niche between Strength & Conditioning and Golf Coaching. This is a ‘gaps’ argument. The professional in question felt threatened by my recent content about “golf fitness” not being a meaningful phrase. Unfortunately there’s no real objective evidence for this in-between golf fitness training, especially if it forms the basis for your overall approach. There’s nothing wrong with specific development exercises. But it’s nothing a good S&C coach with an understanding of golf cannot implement. Recall that there are huge performance determinants in fundamentals like strength and impulse scores, this should get preferential attention over anything resembling golf in the gym. Big rocks first. But many are trying to sell you on pebbles. Important we have these discussions determining the direction of golf physical preparation.

Golf fitness sucks a lot but sometimes it doesn't. I came to golf as an objective outsider, I've resisted using the term golf fitness. It seems like a non sequitur. It means whatever golf fitness experts or golf media wants it to mean. Coming into the sport one thing golf fitness does and did poorly is grasp the underpinning physical attributes that underpin golf. This is largely due to golf cultures obsession with technical swing model above everything else including physical preparation. A lot in past 5-7 years. So what does golf fitness get right sometimes? Sports specific exercise or SPE and SDE What do I mean by this? If we use Bondarchuks classification system we can group exercise into gour distinct categories; CE (Competitive Exercise), SDE (Specific Development Exercise), SPE (Specific Preparatory Exercise), GPE (General Preparatory Exercise). CE, or Competitive Exercise, involves executing the competitive movement, in golf this is golf practice. SDE, or Specific Development Exercise, replicates the competitive movement closely but employs unconventional implements. For instance weighted clubs, throws, band or cable work that mimics elements of the swing. SPE, or Specific Preparatory Exercises, engage the same primary muscles as competitive exercises but may not precisely mimic the motion. In the context of golf this could be heavy throws, jumps, rotation etc GPE, or General Preparatory Exercises, represent a departure from CE's and can even involve different energy systems. This is basic S&C fundamentals, energy systems work and diversity of movement expression to help build robustness. I see a lot of exercises in golf fitness that mimic golf. By a lot a mean its the norm. Why has this situation arisen? The emphasis on sports-specific exercises and the potential medicalization of golf fitness may stem from various factors within the fitness and sports industries. So why is golf fitness lousy? Here are a few possible reasons: Market Trends and Industry Influence: Fitness industries often respond to market trends and consumer demands. If there is a perceived interest or demand for sports-specific training in golf, fitness professionals and businesses may focus on providing services that cater to those interests. Influence of Golf Professionals: Golf coaches and professionals may have a significant influence on the types of fitness training recommended for golfers. If influential figures in the golf world promote sports-specific exercises, it can shape the approach taken by fitness trainers and enthusiasts. Perceived Performance Gains: The idea behind sports-specific exercises is that they mimic the movements and demands of the sport, potentially leading to more direct improvements in performance. While lower body strength and jump height have been shown to correlate with golf performance, there may be a belief that exercises mimicking golf swings or movements could yield even better results. Individual Differences: Fitness is highly individual, and what works well for one person may not work as effectively for another. Some golfers may benefit more from sports-specific exercises, while others might see better results with a more generalized fitness approach. Golfers live in an N=1 tyranny where relativistic experience often trumps actually evidence. If a superstar golfer says 'X' did not work for them people will cite that as evidence. Does SPE & SDE have a home in golf performance? Are these exercises completely useless? Not necessarily. Problem here is objectivity. Much of what we see given out to golfers is based on look and feel. But it doesn't mean, they're all bad it just means bad coaches can throw shit at a wall and not worry about what sticks. A great golfer can still win and the coach can crow about their training. If they lose, nothing can be pinned on them. Bad golf fitness coaches have maximised upsides and minimised downsides. Working in long drive has taught me a lot about specific development and that we can get 1-2mph more using certain exercises and potentiation work, via process of trial and error. This is edge case programming and should be treated as such. Much like T&F long drive turns golf into a highly subjective one into one with objective outcomes. Did I get faster? Typically golf fitness coaches are not held up to such scrutiny. With golf fitness experts basically aiming for a moving target in respect to physical preparation it means results are harder to evidence. Where with ETPI (European Tour Performance Institute) brought in objective testing standards, we can ask questions about transfer into objective golf performance outcomes like availability and clubhead speed. I've found once an appropriate base has been built this gives us freedom to explore SDE & SPE. After and not before a respectable level of physical strength hopefully we can this a number (I like 1.6-2.0 Back squat for instance or 2500+ IMTP or 380+ CMJ imp). Most golf fitness experts seem focused on SDE & SPE first and foremost, this short changes players, making they pay twice Kier Wenham Flatt said "once for their mistake and again for the correction towards appropriate correction". I treat the GDE and SDE/SPE split in a pareto distribution it should probably be 80% generalised training 20% Novel or special exercise. Not the other way around. For Programs t.co/5A7A26FI2I

🚨🤝⛳️ #DEAL OR NO DEAL? — Bryson DeChambeau says people are ‘losing interest’ in golf and a deal ‘needs to happen fast’ for the good of the sport: “Well there's multiple ways that you can solve this problem. I think that from a player's perspective, it needs to come back together for the fans, No. 1. The fans are what drive this sport. If we don't have fans, we don't have golf. We are not up here entertaining. That's the most important thing as of right now, the low-hanging fruit. There's got to be a way to come together. How that comes together, that's above all of us out here. We can give input. We can have little moments where we say, hey, we think this would be a good idea or that would be a good idea, but ultimately, it's up to the guys up top to figure it out and figure it out quickly because we can't keep going this direction. It's not sustainable for sure, and we all respect that and recognize that and want the best for the game of golf. We all love this game and we want to keep playing it and we want to keep competing.” “The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat. It's great to have the majors where we come together, but we want to be competing, at least I want to be competing every week, with all of the best players in the world for sure… And it needs to happen fast. It's not a two-year thing. Like it needs to happen quicker rather than later just for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest.

Why 5/3/1 might not be helping your golf I admire golfer who are self starters and search out training programs themselves, their inability to disseminate can however leave them underachieving. A player I was working with decided to take their fitness to the next level during the season by incorporating a popular easily googled powerlifting program into their routine, I think it was 5/3/1 nothing outrageous. But they picked up the bug for squat, bench and deadlift. Getting stronger initially pretty quickly, then after a few months started coming unstuck. Golfer: "I added powerlifting to my training program to get stronger, but I'm always sore and tired. What gives?" Me: "That's a bold move! Tell me more." Golfer: "Well, I wanted to hit further and be more resilient. But, I just can't recover, and my game is suffering!" We delved deeper into their training regimen and found out they were pushing limits in both golf and in their lifting. Powerlifting is a sporting discipline of its own. Their body was overloaded, causing fatigue and discomfort. 5/3/1 is a great program! Just not the program we needed. Fundamentally we reduced the volume but kept in the lifts they had learned to love. Pulling stuff off google shows initiative but often athletes who like a prescriptive approach can't reinterpret or adapt programs. You have to have a program that serves you, you should not be serving your program. For programs actually built for golfers linktr.ee/Poweringthrough

Train or are a travel athlete? Get comfortable with dumbbells, you owe it to your clients and yourself to master as many DB variations as possible. Most hotel gyms often have a DB rack at minimum. Even if it is just 20kg. Here’s some variations I like 👇

Combo Exercises Generally make two exercises worse by combining them Some are great however, the single arm RDL might be one. @ZEvenEsh approved, it’s one hell of a core and t-spine exercise as well as an anti rotation exercise. Here Demo’d by pro golfer @marcoitn

Finally finished watching Full Swing before the next series starts. Golf was and is still in a very interesting place right now. Filling out the characters we see Thursdays - Sundays helps make the sport relatable. The struggle is very real at all levels of the sport.
