The entire notion that MT has "good writing" needs to be seriously challlenged because people have been so concerned with the content that we've allowed this idea that the writing has any merit to begin with to slide by when it's honestly written like pure rancid slop.

A common form of Mushoku Tensei apologia is to be like "Yeah it has some weird moments but you have to admit it's really well-written" the whole time this is the writing in question:

This is objectively correct take for reasons I could elaborate on until the end of time; The most revealing aspect of this text is that Rudeus evaluates his sisters on a sexual metric in the first place. By stating, "my little sisters just didn't do anything for me," he highlights that his default mode of interacting with females, even family members, involves assessing their sexual viability. He has to consciously process his lack of attraction because feeling attraction is his standard baseline. He is a hedonist and this the a default path when isolated for years. ​ "Sometimes I found that slightly regrettable," showd his hedonistic worldview. Psychologically, it suggests the Rudeus's 'id' (the primal, pleasure-seeking part of the psyche) views any missed opportunity for sexual gratification as a loss, overriding the familial context. He wishes, on some base level, that he could derive pleasure from them simply because they fit his physical type "slim, diminutive girls". ​ Rudeus resolves his thoughts with, "It was nice that I could be affectionate with them without feeling dirty about it." This shows genuine relief. It implies that if he were attracted to them, he might not trust his own self control to maintain appropriate boundaries. He relies on his lack of physical arousal, rather than his moral compass, to keep his behavior familial and safe. The use of the word "dirty" shows an active superego (the moral, societal rule following part of the psyche). Despite his hedonism, he understands the taboos. He knows that sexualizing his younger sisters is morally wrong, and he is ultimately glad that his biological wiring spared him from the guilt/hame, and internal conflict that would arise if his desires matched his physical preferences. I applaud the mangaka for not caring what people think and just creating for himself. That being said, this is art...and no piece of art is immune to critique or criticism. You made Rudeus a pervert, can't get mad when he gets called a pervert despite the progress he's made. 🤷🏾‍♂️
