I walked into my dad’s bedroom and yelled: “I QUIT!” I had just gone through my 3rd tournament in a row without getting a single hit. Honestly… I was SICK of struggling. My dad had put me on a travel ball team 2 years above my age group. Fastballs were repeatedly blowing by me. My jersey had to be custom tailored because I was so small. I barely talked because deep down… I knew I was the weakest player on the team. The game felt FAST. Overwhelming. Some weekends, I honestly wondered if I even belonged out there. My dad started wondering if maybe we had made a mistake. So he thought: “What if he also played against his own age group? Would he build confidence?” So we joined Little League. He told me: “Give it a few more weeks. If you still don’t like it, you can quit.” And something interesting happened… After struggling against older players all weekend… going back to my age group suddenly felt slower and easier. That’s where my confidence started growing. Fast forward and I played with that same travel ball team for years to come. By 14, I was consistently playing against 16-year-olds. By 16, I was one of the best players in California. Looking back, I realized something: My dad gave me one of the biggest gifts possible. Playing against harder competition early. Because once you adjust to harder competition… you separate yourself versus average competition. Thank you for reading, Jermaine Curtis P.S. — The picture was taken in 2000. I was 13 years old and they were 15. I was STILL getting dominated. But the next year, I physically caught up… and mentally started believing I belonged. After that, everything changed. P.S.S. — If you enjoyed this, repost/share it. That tells me you want more content like this.

I signed to UCLA my junior year of high school and was told I was going to start Day 1. Opening Day at UCLA? I was sitting the bench. 😭 I had 2 choices: 1. Complain, pout, and blame the coaches OR 2. Find the holes on the team and become valuable. So for 3 weeks, I sat the bench. I showed up early. Stayed late. Cheered for my teammates. Dragged the field every 3rd inning. Meanwhile, I studied the team. The middle infielders were doing well. Third base wasn’t. So I told the coaches: “I can play third.” Then I noticed something else: Offensively, we were either hitting home runs or getting out. I saw the gap. If I could become a tough out, get on base, and bring energy to the team… I could create value. Then we played Miami. The starting third baseman was hitting .115. They gave me a shot. I went 2 for 3 with a walk. Played solid defense. Brought energy. I never sat the bench again. Eventually, I became team captain… and we were ranked #1 in the country. One thing baseball taught me: Opportunities don’t always go to the most talented player. Sometimes they go to the player who becomes the most valuable.

@TaylorHoliday As well as SS receiving throw glove side and spinning in sync to make his throw. Perfect.

This is my life’s greatest achievement: You have no idea how many hours of practice it takes to create this moment. The amount of things that have to happen in sequence. For 11 and 12 years olds. CF sprinting to back up his teammate. Catcher mask off communicating “4” Pitcher backing up the plate. SS lined up to home. CF throw to SS online. SS moving his feet to receive the throw. Catcher in perfect tagging position. SS throw home perfectly placed. Tag applied without dropping the ball. Umpire in perfect position. OUT! In a huge moment in a playoff game. Better than any orchestra. The joy this brings me is unfathomable for most.

I mean, c’mon. Let’s make this misguided (Bozeman fan) man’s design work come true.

@406mtsports One of the absolute best human beings I know. I know she didn’t get the support or resources she needed there. A sad day for softball at Carroll and for softballers across MT. No one can create a culture like her.

Many programs’ social media that has post after post of the head coach looks so cringy. A program’s social should usually be about: • The players • The team • The university • The fans & community • The journey Coaches please stop doing mic’d up, let the players be the spot light. The coach is the narrator. The players are the movie. #GoGriz
