As you know, @chrisvanderveen, photojournalists often ask better questions than the reporters or correspondents do! Toward the end of an interview (but while still rolling), I’d almost always ask the photojournalist if there was anything I was missing. And they’d usually ask a question of the subject (while instructing that subject to keep looking at me) that prompted an amazing response! That’s teamwork; that’s journalism 🎯

The people who are going to make critical decisions about the fate of journalism darn well better understand how journalism works. We call our photographers at 9News photojournalists for a reason. And I owe so much of my career to their journalism. 6/6

It’s not my job to weigh in on ongoing Tegna/Nexstar litigation. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out this statement from @OhioAG yesterday The suggestion that photojournalists aren’t journalists represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the profession itself. 1/

I recently had a someone complain a journalist didn’t ask “the right” questions... This person had recently been interviewed — and the questions completely threw them off. So I agreed to watch the interview. Guess what: the journalist asked all legit questions… ones I would have asked! The problem? They weren’t questions this expert had prepared for 🤦‍♂️ No fact-based journalist following ethical standards is going to give you the questions in advance (you *can* ask for topics, though) It’s on *you*, as the expert, to anticipate — and structure your answers for maximum impact. I call it ‘Anatomy of an Answer’... and I teach it to my clients, and at our bootcamps and courses. And I covered it on stage at the Small Business Expo keynote this month with John Bates ⤵️ Giving a great soundbite isn’t about you knowing the question in advance. ↳ It’s about mastering your message so you can answer any question, anytime, to any audience 🎯 #mediatraining #mediacoach #publicspeaking #mediamasteryexperts #mediaadvisoryexperts

Calling all fractionals! As John Bates & I continue to expand Media Mastery Experts… we’ve realized we’re missing some stories — Those of brands looking to reach entrepreneurs and executives. Our in-person events and virtual training programs would be ideal for that storytelling exposure. So we’re interested in having conversations with experts here on LinkedIn with experience, existing relationships, and a flair for structuring and reeling in sponsorships. Storytelling opportunities that land. DM me to set up a convo Serious inquiries only from those with directly relevant experience, please. Thank you 🙏 #sponsorships #brandexposure #brandstorytelling

I spent 25 years covering elections. Here's what still surprises me… From California to DC — • First federal election covered: 2000 • First national convention covered: 2008 • First Election Night on Capitol Hill: 2016 In a quarter-century of political reporting, I've lost count of my fact-check and accountability stories. And yet it still surprises me how many people get duped! 🤦‍♂️ When I was a journalist, I did countless stories on how to spot misinformation and disinformation. Now that I’ve transitioned to media training and coaching, I train experts to do the same. Three tips: 1. If you see political slop that immediately makes you feel anger, rage or emotional — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ 2. If the info already aligns with your political viewpoint and presents no other side — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ 3. If the content you consume demonizes, defames and dehumanizes people who you disagree with — stop. Start fact-checking ✅ → Only you can control whether you’re susceptible to being conned. → Only you can improve your media literacy. → Only you can prioritize truth over lies. Don’t be duped this year — or any other 🎯 #factcheck #truth #mediacoach #mediatraining
