Honestly, I really had to shake my head when I saw that tweet.
Well... Strictly speaking, it’s not a complete contradiction to say, “I don’t like Subaru, but I think the story is good.” You can enjoy a story for its world-building, mystery, characters, lore, atmosphere, suspense, or direction, and still find the protagonist annoying. That’s technically possible.
But with Re:Zero, this statement is much harder to make than with many other series, as Subaru isn’t just a MC who moves through the plot, but THE emotional and psychological center of the entire story. The plot is so frequently structured that external conflicts only make sense if you take Subaru’s self-image, shame, guilt, fear, longing for connection, feelings of inferiority, and his personal growth seriously.
This is particularly evident in the most recent episode. The episode works primarily because we are drawn into Subaru’s mental breakdown. The first death, the misinterpretation as precognitive dreams, the beginning of the alienation from “Natsuki Subaru,” the overheard conversation, the second fall, “Memories are what shape people,” the traumatic awakening, Reid, the memory of his mother... none of these things are merely plot devices, this IS the story.
You can like Re:Zero on a superficial level and dislike Subaru, and as a matter of personal preference, that is acceptable. But if you truly reject Subaru as a character or view him as something that “ruins” the series, then you’re automatically rejecting a central part of what Re:Zero is actually about.

Re: Zero News by Ice@rezero_ice
Re: Zero is really popping off this season, you really, really love to see it! Given Episode 8 broke the anime-sphere two days ago, I wonder if the aura monster episode next week is going to break it again.

Finished Rezero s3 - 10/10
I can’t say a single think I disliked while watching it, it was emotional, definitely alot more action packed than previous seasons (for anyone that saw the Garfiel fight you know what I’m talkin bout👀). This show just keeps getting better every season

@Rin_Sparrow4951 I don't think ReZero is a time travel anime but I agree that it is one of the best anime out there!
