An ‘ambitious’ Brexit reset is being explored by the PM, aiming for a new EU trade deal. 🚨Treasury estimates suggest about £3bn a year in contributions to ease border frictions and join schemes. Critics say this quietly binds 🇬🇧closer to Brussels.

Here’s the straight, evidence‑based answer. No, the claim is not supported by the best available economic evidence. Multiple independent analyses (CEPR, ECB, OBR) show clear, measurable Brexit‑related losses to UK GDP, trade, investment, and productivity. The UK has not outperformed comparable economies once you adjust for counterfactuals — i.e., where GDP would have been without Brexit. Over the last decade, global shocks have hurt all advanced economies, but Brexit has imposed an additional, persistent drag on the UK. Best estimates suggest Brexit has left UK GDP several percentage points lower than it would otherwise have been, accounting for a substantial share but not all of the UK’s stagnation relative to comparable countries. cepr.org/voxeu/columns/… obr.uk/forecasts-in-d…

Why do people put out lies about loss of GDP and trade from Brexit based on out of date wrong forecasts? The official numbers for trade and GDP over the last ten years show no Brexit losses, with the UK outperforming Germany for GDP.

A terrible decision, and one which will do huge damage to the Government's climate credentials. As Ed knows, this drilling won't lower bills, but instead it sends a clear message that Britain won't be a world leader on ending oil and gas exploitation

The EU is fundamentally rubbish at: ❌️ Signing free trade deals ❌️ Regulating anything ❌️ Growing the economies of member states ❌️ Foreign affairs ❌️ Controlling immigration ❌️ Dealing with a pandemic In fact can you name ANYTHING it does well @GavinBarwell?
Gavin Barwell@GavinBarwell

I guess Seb has to pretend he thinks this if he wants to be selected as a Conservative MP, but it's absurd. The world is *much* less conducive to a free trading, go it alone UK than it was in 2016 - which is why public opinion has shifted decisively in the opposite direction

Name a highly respected economist - anywhere in the world - who thinks Brexit has been economically positive for the UK so far? And quantified it in £. I'll wait 😃

'Those people who say new exploration licenses will somehow create huge amounts of energy for us... I mean, they're just wrong' Ed Miliband - stuck in a doom loop of net zero insanity. Because of him, the UK is the largest economy to ban new licenses for North Sea exploration.

Have to say I am absolutely loving the I am Spartacus moment that @CitySamuel has triggered with her article on converting from remain to leave. I have seen so many people today come out on X as having voted remain but now believing it was the right choice to leave.

Extremely feeble “argument” - ignoring the massive economic and diplomatic damage Brexit has done to Britain. Covid vaccines are your clincher? Because of course they never got those in Europe. They’re all dead now. Such a tragedy.
Sebastian Payne@SebastianEPayne

Couldn't agree more with @CitySamuel today - I too was a reluctant Remainer, but everything that has happened since confirms we made the right decision to Leave. Exiting the EU is a prerequisite for any national revival thetimes.com/comment/column…

Here is my new paper for the Great British Business Council on the importance of oil, gas and coal to the UK economy. The UK’s industrial decline is not inevitable, but the result of decades of deliberate policy choices that have undermined domestic energy production and driven manufacturing offshore. Lowering UK employment and tax revenues, while increasing the UK trade deficit. The paper also includes a plan to reverse this. gbbc.uk/uk-deindustria…

Brexit has shone a light on the performance of the UK’s politicians and civil service. The glare has been so bad that they are running back to Brussels to shield themselves again.

John Swinney reverses the SNP position on North Sea drilling. This is a good move. I respect politicians who are willing to change their position when circumstances change and not stubbornly cling to ideology He said... “We need oil and gas for the foreseeable future. The two risks about imported oil and gas is that you could be importing more climate damaging oil and gas, and you might not be able to import it because of disruption and interruption to supply, because of what’s going on in the Middle East right now. So I think that context changes the balance of the arguments.” Now we just need @Ed_Miliband to do the same thetimes.com/uk/scotland/ar…
