Watch as @nationalgriduk chomps through a hedge. In nesting season. Despite its DCO stating “”In accordance with good practice measure B02, vegetation with the potential to support breeding birds will be programmed to be removed outside of breeding bird season (March to August inclusive) where practicable”. So why was it not practicable not to do it in this instance? The ecologist found nothing (what a surprise) but there is no way a hedge like this does not have nesting birds. (This is Bramford to Twinstead, not Norwich to Tilbury) @PylonsEAnglia

@gnome_alice They are wonderful birds. We had one we hand-reared as a chick ( fell off a roof in Newlyn). It still comes by every day - it’s 28 this year.

@PlanktonPundit Catch and kill is the only way to keep a strict adherence to quotas. So many of the released fish die due to hyperthermia, acidosis or lactic acid induced necrosis so, effectively, are ‘unseen’ = uncounted by the ICCAT UK quota.

Catch and kill, but not catch and release. The UK has just issued recreational catch and release licences for the 2026 bluefin sport fishing season. Regulatory authorities justify catch and release on the basis of the economic activity the sport fishery generates. I have always advocated that any bluefin sport fishing should only be catch and kill, as it was at the turn of the 20th century in UK seas. The size, behaviour and physiology of bluefin tuna make them ill-suited to catch and release sport fishing. Catch and kill should be further restricted to a licensed charter sector with trained skippers. (fishingnews.co.uk/features/bluef…). Catch and release results in an unknown level mortality or, a best guess, and this mortality  may consequently, exceed the recreational quota allocated to the UK for this heavily exploited animal. With catch and kill the mortality is known, the quota can be adhered to and the valuable tuna can enter the human food chain; this would be good economically, for animal welfare and for conservation. Unfortunately, we tend not to see fish as wildlife, as Lissa Wadewitz argued in her 2011 research paper ““Are fish wildlife?”  (Wadewitz L, 2011, Are fish wildlife? Environmental History: 1–5, doi:10.1093/envhis/emr043. academic.oup.com/envhis/article…) While Wadewitz wrote from an American perspective her observations are likely, applicable globally to western society. Wadewitz's article Abstract reads: "This essay argues that mainstream, primarily white, America has historically not valued common fish in the same ways as other more charismatic species, particularly land and sea mammals. The physical characteristics of an animal, its habitat type, its commercial value, and ideas about property in animals all may have influenced popular perceptions of aquatic versus terrestrial species. These issues have, in turn, greatly influenced regulatory and conservation efforts for some species.” To make an analogy that may appear flippant and I hope doesn’t affect my scientific credibility on bluefin tuna (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… & fishingnews.co.uk/news/why-are-b…): In the UK, deer and, in some places, hedgehogs have increased in abundance. How would regulatory authorities or the general public react if game shooters requested licensed, target sport shooting of hedgehogs or deer using paintballs or rubber bullets respectively, methods appropriate to the size of species? Some deer and hedgehogs inadvertently, may die but others may not be mortally ‘harmed’. And while some animals may limp away with a just a bad bruise or broken bone they would heal in time and live to be targeted another day. Under such a  licensed regime shooters could happily practice their wildlife shooting skills on a live moving target. The shooting industry would benefit economically from the extra sporting activity. Surely, nobody would have a problem with that? It’s just shoot and release.” I suspect Schoppenhauer arguments would be made to justify what cannot be rationally, justified. @natgeo @BBCPaulMurphy @ICCAT

@BenGoldsmith It’s a sad reflection on wildlife and wilderness. The more out of touch people are with it, then the more they fear it. Sensationalism and ignorance triumph over nuance and understanding unfortunately.

The British are the most zoophobic people in the world. That whole David Attenborough thing? A big lie. Most Brits want to live in a parking lot. No wildlife at all. Or at least nothing more charismatic than a blue tit. So depressing.

I’ve given the last 4 years of my life to trying to get England to mandate swift bricks. Now I have just a few hours to wait until Scotland votes. By tonight Scotland could have passed swift bricks into law. What would you do? I’m sipping a margarita….
