When looking into Sunderland v Nottingham Forest tonight, there was one angle that stood out to me. It relates to Elliot Anderson, who has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season in my opinion. What I love about Anderson is that he is a proper throwback of a midfielder who can do a bit of everything, including getting stuck into the opposition. I’m backing the English international for a card against Sunderland tonight for a number of reasons. Firstly, Anderson’s stats for fouls committed this season are super high. He ranks third for fouls committed (50) across the Premier League and has fouled eight times in his last five games (2-2-2-1-1). Forest are scrapping for their lives at the moment, with this game at Sunderland giving them an opportunity to go eight points clear of the relegation zone. The fact Anderson is a Geordie, and an ex-Newcastle player, will ensure he is even more fired up for this one. He committed two fouls and was carded in the reverse meeting of these two teams at the City Ground back in September. Sunderland’s midfield is arguably the strongest part of their team, with captain Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra more than up for a physical battle. Xhaka (1.25), Sadiki (1.09) and Diarra (1.69) have all averaged over one foul won per 90 in the Premier League and I expect an extremely competitive midfield battle with Forest’s Anderson and Ibrahim Sangare at the Stadium of Light. Darren England is also one of the stricter referees in the Premier League, averaging 4.7 cards per match, which is the third highest total of all officials with 10+ games in the division this season.
