BREAKING: Geert Wilders scores a major political win as one chamber of the Parliament approves new reforms to the country's migration policy. - Permanent residence permits for asylum seekers will be abolished. They will have to apply for an extension every three years. - It also requires asylum seekers who want to be reunited with their families to have lived in the Netherlands for at least two years and to have both a home and an income. Adult children of asylum seekers will no longer be entitled to reunification at all. - Helping illegal migrants will become punishable under the bill. Activist organizations and NGOs helping illegal immigrants will face the full force of the law. "We have too much immigration, too much Islam, too little respect for our culture and for our citizens. People are afraid of becoming a minority in their own country," Wilders states when setting the stage for the vote a few weeks ago. In 2024, the Netherlands received around 32,000 asylum seekers and another 10,000 family members. However, in the first three months of 2025, the numbers have halved. A vote in the second chamber of Parliament on the bill is expected in the coming months.
